Remote Desktop does not work straight away

I am testing a virtual machine with the new Ubuntu MATE 20.04.

I have always been jealous of Windows systems: enable an option with the mouse, and remote desktop works straight away with very few issues. On Linux, I have always have problems in this respect.

I tried xrdp, which seems to be the most recommended. But I hit many problems and limitations.

I had a long discussion recently with the xrdp guys. I think the MATE community may find some points there worth improving, even if it is only documentation:

In the mean time, maybe someone can tell me what other remote desktop solutions work with a minimum of fuss.

Thanks in advance,
rdiez

https://www.nomachine.com/ is also available for Linux and Windows.

I've been struggling with remote desktop access two weeks ago. Yes, xrdp did not work out of the box. Fortunately, the recipe was simple enouph.

  1. Install remote desktop server sudo apt install xrdp
  2. Install missing dependency sudo apt install xorgxrdp-xrdp-hwe-18.04
  3. Log out of current UM 18.04 and log in from remote computer.

Good luck!
