Remove an icon from notification area

A few days ago I had my laptop connected to an auxiliary monitor. This had the (unintended) effect of putting the “Configure display settings” icon into my “notification area”. I would like to get rid of this icon and cannot find a way to do so.

I tried removing the whole notification area and then restoring it (using “Add to panel”). However the restored notification area persisted in displaying the “Configure display settings” icon.

How can I get rid of the damned thing? Is there a file somewhere that I can edit to achieve the desired result?

I am using Mate 1.12.1 under Ubuntu 16.04.

Hello,
Maybe, you enabled “show screens on panel” in display settings. I am not sure about how this is described for you in your language i only have it in french right now.
Anyway, I wish that will help.

In US English, it's "Show monitors in panel".

yep ! Thanks elcste

Yes! That was the problem. Merci beaucoup to Tristan_VILLERS and to elcste.

De rien ! Welcome !
I guess there is somewhere a button to press to put the thread into "solved" ...
