Remove Disk Safely is MIA…

Hello, I recently installed Ubuntu Mate 16.04. Moved up from Ubuntu 12.04. In Computer, when I went to remove a USB SD card reader, I found that there is no “Remove Disk Safely” option, only “Eject”. Ubuntu 12.04 had this and I always used it. Is it not needed anymore?

Also, the icon for the USB card reader is always displayed in Computer now, even though I removed the device using Eject. What do I need to do to stop this behavior? I have photos…

Thanks

  1. “Eject” is just another way of saying “Remove Disk Safely”.
  2. Don’t know.
  1. I’ve noticed that the wording seems to depend on what kind of media is mounted. For “normal” USB-sticks it shows “Eject” and for external harddisks connected via USB it shows “Remove disk safely”.

  2. The card reader is hardware and standing by, ready to read an inserted card. That’s why the card reader itself is always visible in the Computer view.

Thank You so much for the quick reply

On Mint Cinnamon the card reader doesn’t show until a card is inserted. I’ve just switched from Ubuntu Mate to Mint Cinnamon so I can’t check, but so far as I remember it was the same.

Cinnamon uses Nemo as a file manager, it must have different logic (=settings) than Caja.

Edit: I believe the same kind of behaviour could be set in Ubuntu MATE (Caja) with an udev rule.

samuvuo: Thanks for the clarification, I should have realised that it might be a different file manager. To test this I have just installed Caja on Cinnamon and it does the same. I don’t know about “udev rule” (whatever that is :grinning:), but I wouldn’t have bothered to change any related settings. I’ll make a live DVD with UM 16.04 (I assume matetwo is using the 65bit version) on and will try it to see what happens - so none of the settings on my computer can affect it .

Hi ChrisOfBristol,

I checked my Computer after it booted this morning… and low and behold the card reader icon was gone. I guess it just wanted to hang around with other icons for awhile LOL :grinning:

Thanks

Great, thanks for telling me, as I’ve had a few failures to burn a DVD (horrible things) so I’m pleased not to have to bother now! It was also a bit difficult finding the 65bit version that I mentioned in my previous post
