I am trying to share folders with my network, but the app says samba needs to be installed, which it is. I have tried re-installing, deleting and installing, but no joy.
I have made sure that the samba server is started: sudo service smbd start
Please show me how you got Caja to manage or even show shares. That was one of my complaints coming from 16.04 to 18.04. I was unable create or view shares via Caja. I did get Samba to work. My solution is here. But I still can not create or view shares via Caja.
No luck with your terminal commands. It did say that the latest version of samba was already installed.
I edited smb.conf and added the section, but still get the error message when I select System/Administration/Shared Folders, that samba needs to be installed.
I upgraded from 16.04. Sad to say, a fresh install of 18.04 may be necessary, as there are a few other issues as well (e.g. Logitech Media Server no longer working).
I also wonder if there has been file corruption due to too many writes on the SSD, where the system files are located.
I am thinking that is why Caja is showing you shares and not me. I did a fresh install. I have seen both good and bad reports of those upgrading from 16.04.
I just tested folder sharing on my laptop computer. Samba is installed and the server appears to be running, but I get the same error message. That computer also was upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04.1.
But until some major problems arise, I am loath to do a fresh install. I have loads of software that would need to be downloaded, and my email and other accounts would also have to be reinstalled. Ugh!!!
I just checked my computer notes, and about a week ago I had no problems with sharing folders and using the samba server. So my best guess is that some recent software and/or security update caused this issue!
I am still confused why you see shares in Caja and not me. I sort of remember some interface for Caja and Samba being installed with 16.04, but I could not find anything with 18.04.
Glad it worked! When I installed Mate on top of Ubuntu, all the caja extras got installed as well. But I took a look at those extras, and that’s when I saw caja-share and thought to mention it.
