Screen Magnifier under Ubuntu-Mate-18.04.1-Desktop

Hi everyone!

i try it in my best english

After a long time working with Windows i like to work dual with Windows and Linux. Many Time and Videos and reading i found Ubuntu Mate and i would like to test it.

After download and install comes me a very importent question for me.

Because i.m nearly blind i need an Screen Magnifier. For Windows called the Programm Zoomtext.

Many Forumtopicreadings later i found Topics they told that Compiz is a realy good Screen Magnifier.

But the Searchaction in the Software-Boutique dosn.t find the Application.

Can you help me to find an Magnifier with i can Zoom in and out and the Programm is following the Mouse?

Can you try to tell me the Way to the Programm that i can find it blind? Because whithout Magnification i can.t see the Screen.

Tanks so mutch

Hi @dunny2005, Compiz is already one of the Window Managers in MATE-Tweak as seen here near the bottom:

There's a very useful magnifier enabled by default. Press "Super" (Windows Key) and scroll in an out with the mouse wheel. This plugin is called "Enhanced Zoom Desktop" and very popular.

Compiz is a unique Window Manager and other things come with it like animations. But changing Compiz plugin settings takes a separate program called compizconfig-settings-manager (CCSM).

Compiz does have another magnifier I do not use that but it is not enabled by default.

Compiz takes a little getting used to but well worth it for this zoom feature in my opinion. I use "Enhanced Zoom Desktop" regularly.

I hope this gets you started.

Thanks for your fast answer.

First thing:
when i press the Superkey and use the Scrollwheel there is no effect.

When i.m at the homescreen and press menu then i found the point “accessebility” and in the right menu is a point “zoom”. When i click these opens a small window with xZoom X3 but this tool i don.t understand. When press and hold the left mousekey and move the mouse i can see in the little window a little bit zoomed the mouseposition.

I.ve installed the german language and can.t find the mate-tweaks. Have i forgot anything?

When i open the menu i found the Point “settings” and there is a point “window” but there is no Compiz.

The Screenshot you show me “thanks for that” i didn.t have.

First thing is to find the German MATE-Tweak so Compiz can be set as the Window Manager instead of Marco. I imagine it will be MATE-#something# that looks like the picture I posted.

When switching Window Managers expect screen flipping and a confirmation Compiz has actually been selected. Compiz can be fickle on some graphics.

Compiz must be the Window Manager to use “Enhanced Zoom Desktop”.

I know much has been done with the “Super” key and suspicious there may be a conflict with menus. Sorry, I do not use these menus so not familiar.

@dunny2005, The best I can tell in my virtual machine version of 18.04 the Super key will work with the Compiz Zoom BUT also open the default menu on release. A lovely conflict, indeed.

The CCSM I mentioned above could change the Zoom key to something else.

Did you find Compiz and is the Zoom working otherwise?

EDIT: I just tried a live boot and confirm it does work well except for that default menu conflict. If you can get Compiz as your Window Manager it should work.

YEEEAAAAHHHH!!! Thanks so mutch. Your Answer has motivated me so mutch, that i.m looking with my mobile magnifier. Normaly i take that to read Menucards in Restaurants.

I Worked the Welcome Screen step by step and then come the idea under the menutab the point “all” all the entries to watch and i found mate tweaks and compiz and now it work very great.

Tonight i will take a look how i can configure compiz that i can invert the colorchema and the mouse movement.

So so mutch thanks for your Help

Great! I’m not sure how it compares to other magnifiers but I’ve heard it is highly regarded.

And Compiz has a lot to play with. Good Luck!
