Dell Inspiron 11 3162 (a new netbook with almost the same hardware as a chromebook)
Intel Celeron N3050 Braswell 1.6 Ghz > 2.16 Ghz (dual core)
2 GB of RAM
32 GB of SanDisk eMMC (a cheaper type of flash storage, slower than SSD but faster than HDDs, it's widely used in tablets and smartphones)
Intel Wireless 3160 driver: iwlwifi
Intel Audio Device 2284
Intel HD Graphics 400

  • Ubuntu MATE 16.04.1 - MATE 1.12.1 - 4.4.0-62-generic x86_64 (64 bit) - UEFI mode (secure boot disabled) - latest BIOS.
  • Interacts with both my Windows Phone and Android. HP Printer works. microSD cards work.
  • Using all Open Source drivers. Only microcode updates are activated as proprietary.
  • Most resource intensive game I can play? Counter Strike: Source. Anything lower will run good, including PSX emulators. It is capable of running Unity (but runs better with Low Graphics Mode). On the other hand, GNOME is VERY slow on this machine. KDE is fast and usable too. But you get the most out of it with MATE.

BUGS

  • Bluetooth file sharing works until you suspend Ubuntu, because of the network-manager bug #1589401. This bug causes all other Wireless APs to disappear from the list after suspend, replacing the Wifi icon with the Ethernet icon. Workaround: sudo systemctl restart network-manager. It fixes until you suspend again. To automate it, use this script. This bug seems to only affect Ubuntu based OSes. It can be annoying for inexperienced users, but it's tolerable.

  • I witnessed a new problem in which the whole MATE panels disappear at random times. You can run mate-panel --reset and if it doesn't work, go for Ctrl + Alt + PrintScr + R E I S U B , which will reboot the PC. The workaround I use is disabled compositing. Marco without compositing.

  • Fonts will occasionally become corrupted after leaving the laptop idle. After it executes the screensaver and sleeps, the characters in the UI become unreadable. Disable screensaver (leave it blank screen) and it keeps it from happening all the time, but it will happen.

These bugs only seem to affect Ubuntu and the MATE desktop. If you go ahead and install, say, Fedora or Manjaro, it will work without problems. I use Ubuntu and MATE because they work better for me and I know my way around the bugs.

Always confirm if TRIM is scheduled (by cron or by systemd timer): sudo systemctl status fstrim.timer or check if fstrim file exists in/etc/cron.weekly/ and try it with sudo fstrim -v /

Install ZRAM (compressed RAM), because this laptop runs out of memory when opening lots of tabs on Chrome (Firefox runs painfully slow) or executing some video editor... sudo apt install zram-config does it all automagically. Ubuntu MATE uses ~500 MB when idle. It's responsive and reliable if you stay within its limits.

Travel machine for winter. Summer use for BOINC calculations. Ubuntu-Mate is my recommendation for ‘new’ users first experience with Linux.

This is my “Man-Cave” workshop computer, just to do Arduino programming mainly, but I like to keep it neat and up to date, hence U-Mate. I have now moved all my machines, in this order RPi3, i-5 Desktop, MacBookPro and eeePC over to U-Mate. Getting robust environments that perform well and are consistent (as much as can be expected) across these machines is excellent.

I have connected this computer to a Philips older 4:3 screen (1280x1024, 19") using the supplied DVI-> VGA adapter and found the screen was not auto detected. Using a DVI-D ->DVI-D cable cured this totally. Thanks to Wolfman and others for tracking this solution down.
Using this provided a temporary remedy until the new cable arrived -

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_60.00" 109.00 1280 1368 1496 1712 1024 1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA1 "1280x1024_60.00"
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode "1280x1024_60.00"

Cheers and thanks to all the people who contribute to the U-Mate community, Rob

Hello!
I’m using Ubuntu Mate on my Acer Netbook (ES1-131)
Everything works beautifully out of box. I only wish the web browsing would be a little faster. It is sometimes laggy. But I know, my maschine has a weak processor.

Best regards: Stefan

I have a machine with one of those older AMD Athlon triples. I’ve overclocked it a bit, so it really is fast. I tried to unlock the 4th core, but that didn’t work very well, so I’ve stuck with just the minor overclocking.

For the price range, that processor has been one of the best I’ve owned.

Cheers!

That’s my current system today - I’ve been using this system since 2009 - so it has lasted me well. I bought this from the Dell Outlet. Paid $249 for it, and then about 2 years ago I bumped it to 8GB of memory and the 2 SSDs and the better video card. Not bad for the $600 I put into over the 8 years I’ve used it.

But it’s replacement has just shipped. I post those specs once it arrives! I’m hoping I can get 8 years out of it as well!

I rather just describe my system:

Model: johnnyrevival 7.4.5 or something (built from parts)

Windows 10 Education 64-bit (like Enterprise edition) and Ubuntu-MATE 16.04.2 64-bit, all EFI.

AMD A8 7600 3,1 ghz 4x, Asus A68HM-Plus (I know they suck, but I have strict budget atm, Im planning to get some good i5 with some average mobo)

8 gb DDR3 1600 mhz

Gtx 1060 3 gb

240 gb SSD, Samsung

1 tb hdd

Zyxel NWD 6505 wifi dongle that works well in Windows but not at all in Linux, as it has mt7610u chipset and the original driver stopped working after kernel 2.6 or something, and last time someones fixed version worked in 4.4 or something.

Wireless keyb and mouse, 42" tv as monitor, couch as pc seat ^^

Im glad with my system, just cpu, mobo and wifi dongle I would change… but my current cpu works well, its just a bottle neck when playing some cpu hungry 3D games. My gfx card would handle them well.

Oh yes, and tv I would change, because its hd ready and not full hd. Also some quick screen would be good, higher hz you know
