That’s my current system today - I’ve been using this system since 2009 - so it has lasted me well. I bought this from the Dell Outlet. Paid $249 for it, and then about 2 years ago I bumped it to 8GB of memory and the 2 SSDs and the better video card. Not bad for the $600 I put into over the 8 years I’ve used it.

But it’s replacement has just shipped. I post those specs once it arrives! I’m hoping I can get 8 years out of it as well!

Zyxel NWD 6505 wifi dongle that works well in Windows but not at all in Linux, as it has mt7610u chipset and the original driver stopped working after kernel 2.6 or something, and last time someones fixed version worked in 4.4 or something.

Wireless keyb and mouse, 42" tv as monitor, couch as pc seat ^^

Im glad with my system, just cpu, mobo and wifi dongle I would change… but my current cpu works well, its just a bottle neck when playing some cpu hungry 3D games. My gfx card would handle them well.

Oh yes, and tv I would change, because its hd ready and not full hd. Also some quick screen would be good, higher hz you know :slight_smile:

Using this post as a way of saying “hello”, and learning how to use the editor here.

The above configuration is well-burned-in over the last month. I am using NFS/autofs to mount remote shares on other Ubuntu-Mate machines including two converted iMacs(2009 models)

I have tried practically every flavor of Ubuntu out there (Budgie Remix was a favorite, but lite on tested features)
MATE has, for whatever reasons, proven to be the most stable. I don’t have the freezes that I had with Unity. And, once I installed GEdit, it was a perfect fit for me and the hardware.

Everything works great. Didn’t have to do anything special for everything to work. System runs smooth. Only hick-ups I get is waiting for HDD access. SSD will probably be in my future, but this is good enough for now.

Even though the system is from 2009, it serves me well as a web browsing and word processing machine.

Paid $80 for the computer
Paid $24 for the processor upgrade
Paid $50 for the RAM upgrade

Can’t complain about the price

Two more pieces of hardware I added in the meantime, both of which work fine with Ubuntu MATE 16.04.2:

  • Miditech Midilink Mini USB MIDI adapter
  • Yamaha Reface series keyboard
    Both are class-compliant and thus don’t require any additional drivers.

The Reface is also recognized by the https://soundmondo.yamahasynth.com/ website when using Chromium or Google Chrome with WebMIDI enabled, assuming it is connected via USB directly. They apparently check for the device name and don’t allow you to pick a one explicitly.

Finally I tried starting the Reface firmware updater for Windows via WINE (2.6 right now), and it did start up and detect all connected MIDI devices.
I have not yet performed an update, though - not sure yet if I want to risk it, as firmware updates can cause issues if something goes wrong.

This is a small, light laptop with great battery life that I carry around. Almost everything works, but I had to fight the Bluetooth to get it going. I was pulling my hair out for a minute.

It’s HP Folio 13. 13" screen, backlit keyboard, Dual Core CPU. Battery last over 4 hours even though it’s probably 7 or 8 years old. It was slow as hell with Windows, but it’s great now.

Currently running Mate on a little Thinkpad 11e as you can see. I initially had some trouble with the kernel bug that causes random total freezes on Bay Trail processors, but the max cstate = 1 workaround described here stopped that. I believe this issue should not affect the current generation of 11e, since they aren’t using Bay Trail chips. With UM, the little computer runs fast enough for all my daily tasks—writing, web browsing, and programming.

So, yeah, it’s a cheap student laptop, but it gets a lot of work done. You don’t need a whale of a computer to have a very useful little Linux machine! :slight_smile:

I just got this old server really cheap and I figured I’d see what I could do with it. I’m figuring maybe a central video repository / movie downloader. Dual quad core processors, dual NICs and a 750 GB HDD in a RAID 5 configuration. I loaded Ubuntu server and then overlaid the Mate desktop.

I’m busy setting up this machine for someone, dual boot w/ w10. So far almost everything works including the touchscreen. Only problem I’ve seen is the function keys for brightness modification aren’t doing anything, so I’ll try this when the update is done.
