Currently running Mate on a little Thinkpad 11e as you can see. I initially had some trouble with the kernel bug that causes random total freezes on Bay Trail processors, but the max cstate = 1 workaround described here stopped that. I believe this issue should not affect the current generation of 11e, since they aren’t using Bay Trail chips. With UM, the little computer runs fast enough for all my daily tasks—writing, web browsing, and programming.

So, yeah, it’s a cheap student laptop, but it gets a lot of work done. You don’t need a whale of a computer to have a very useful little Linux machine! :slight_smile:

I just got this old server really cheap and I figured I’d see what I could do with it. I’m figuring maybe a central video repository / movie downloader. Dual quad core processors, dual NICs and a 750 GB HDD in a RAID 5 configuration. I loaded Ubuntu server and then overlaid the Mate desktop.

I’m busy setting up this machine for someone, dual boot w/ w10. So far almost everything works including the touchscreen. Only problem I’ve seen is the function keys for brightness modification aren’t doing anything, so I’ll try this when the update is done.

This is my current desktop/workstation. I mainly use it for blogging, browsing, Netflix, etc. Occasionally I edit video, audio, and or photos for my various projects. Everything runs perfectly, the only thing I have an issue with is Compiz doesn’t display my preferred theme correctly so I’m on Marco for now.

Normally I build all my machines from scratch, but this one was too cheap to pass up. Since I have bad arthritis in both hands my current keyboard is an ancient MS Office keyboard - the left side scroll wheel is heavenly. Mouse is a Logitech MX518. I have browser scrolling and mouse pointer set fast so I don’t have to move my hands much.

My current NAS is a simple 4TB Segate Central, phone is a rooted first gen Droid Turbo, and I’ve got a rooted Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 and Amazon Fire 7 that I use mainly for reading - I’m a voracious reader.

House is wired for gigabit ethernet going to a Netgear switch and a Ubee modem, and most of the wireless stuff still connects via a WRT54G Linksys running Tomato firmware. Yeah, it’s old but it’s rock solid. I’m eyeing the new WRT32000ACM but waiting for more of the third party firmware bugs to be worked out before I make that leap.

The rest of the house is filled with other devices - my brother is an avid gamer, we have several Echo Dots, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, etc. I can’t keep track of all the stuff to be honest.

I’ve been an Ubuntu user since 7.04, then I went to 8.04 and finally Ubuntu Studio 10.04 which I held onto for ages. I was thrilled when Ubuntu MATE 14.04 came out. I only made the change to 16.04 a few days ago and ditched dual booting with Windows for good.

Update on the Yamaha Reface keyboard:

Unfortunately the firmware cannot be updated via WINE. The updater will run and nothing will break, but the update process will not successfully complete, leaving you with the previous firmware state.

Also, Soundmondo apparently only detects a Reface keyboard (the Sync indicator lights up in green), but not which one, since patch download does not work (the button remains inactive).

Problems:
Was running the 18.04 Beta 1 version but had problem with Nouveau driver crashing the system. No additional drivers were available in 18.04 b1 so down graded…all good since. Hoping my current working driver is available in the final 18.04 release.

I picked up a new scanner: Canon LiDE 120, which according to https://sane.alioth.debian.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-CANON should be fully supported.

However it turns out while it does work out of the box on 18.04 (on real hardware, tested with both of my PCs), the older driver in 16.04 has some known issues causing long delays before scanning starts and a completely black image, rendering it pretty much useless.
But that can be solved by a newer driver version: sane-git PPA to the rescue!

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rolfbensch/sane-git
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt dist-upgrade

in case of conflicts run

$ sudo apt -f install

So now it works on the older version as well (tested on both of my PCs).

One oddity I noticed in Virtualbox though (I only tried 18.04) is that I have to physically unplug the scanner and plug it back again, then re-enable USB passthrough for it if I want to scan again after closing a scan application - no matter which one.
I can scan as many times as I want until the application is closed, but once I close it, it gets messed up somehow.
This may well be an issue with Virtualbox USB passthrough, as it does not happen on real hardware.

I only just installed Ubuntu MATE on this laptop, coming back to the distro after a long time of hopping from distro to distro because I ran into more and more issues with each one. I haven’t done thorough tests yet (resuming from hibernate being the first feature I’ll have to try), but so far everything seems to work fine.
As you’ve probably guessed from the only 3% of storage used, I haven’t even finished installing everything yet as I’m writing this.

Everything in this laptop is the way it came when I bought it used a few months ago, except for the 512GB M.2 2242 SSD which I bought because I needed extra storage for my Windows installation at the time. The 256GB SSD contains my root file system, and the 512GB SSD is used as a separate home partition.
I don’t know if this is the very best configuration for me, but so far it works just fine and using both disks for one OS (since I no longer need Windows) should be a treat.

I’ll come back and edit this post if I run into any issues I can’t (relatively) easily fix.
