I have just installed Ubuntu MATE 16.04 32 bit on this identical machine today for a friend. Originally it a sampler Windows 7 version on it and it was unusable. A few months ago I put Ubuntu MATE 15.10 on it and he found it was very usable. It is still very usable with the latest version of Ubuntu MATE.

My friend’s machine was labelled as a Packard Bell, but it is identical in all other respects. Same processor, memory, graphics resolution. I as looking for a new battery today and I wondered why Acer kept coming up. Now I know why!

Printer: Samsung ML-1670
Scanner: Epson Perfection V300 Photo

WLAN: Ralink Technology, Corp. RT5372 Wireless Adapter (LogiLink WL0150)

Misc. notes:

  • I did not test WLAN thoroughly, just plugged in the adapter and it properly listed the nearby networks, but I did not connect to any as I am using wired ethernet only
  • scanner and printer work with proprietary manufacturer drivers only
  • for the K70 it is recommended to clear the X calculator keyboard shortcut as one of the custom buttons triggers it besides its intended effect
  • the 750 Ti worked out of the box with the open source drivers, but DXX-Rebirth failed to start due to a missing GLX visual … the proprietary drivers work fine, except for the need to run nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="DVI-D-0: 1920x1200 { ForceCompositionPipeline = On }" on login to avoid tearing if you don’t use a hardware compositor (with Compton it is not needed)

Edit: replaced the USB drive with a Samsung 850 Pro (512 GB) as the main Linux drive.

Other Device:
POD TonePort/GearBox USB sound card (formerly used for recording during my windows time but now solely used as external sound card)

The partition is in LVM which I had when installed previous Ubuntu Unity.

What I use the computer for?
Basically almost everything since this is my only machine…from watching videos, browsing internet, to doing graphic stuffs using Inkscape, Gimp and Scribus… I don’t play games though and don’t have printer and scanner

Background:
I bought this computer in around 2005-2006 and even so, the processor was not the higher end one at that time… LOL this is mainly because I had a tight budget and for some reason I did not brave enough to use AMD…along the way I have changed the motherboard and upgraded the RAM to 2GB.

I recently switched to MATE from Unity. I’m new to linux and my first install was ubuntu 12.04 (using wubi.exe installed on windows XP). When microsoft stopped XP support in 2014, I single installed 14.04 Unity to just give it a try although my machine might not powerful enough and it wasn’t run that smoothly under 12.04. To my surprise it runs much faster than when it was dual installed with windows…and without realizing it I have been using unity up to 15.10.

Then when the new LTS comes out, I’m thinking of to try out different DE to see if i can optimize my old hardware more. And here I am using MATE at the moment…I was expecting some drastic improvements on my hardware but I guess unless I use stuff like LXDE, the differences are not too obvious for my kind of hardware.

Anyway, I think I would stick with MATE for now because I like this forum… I mean it’s easier for noob linux user like me to look for tips and workaround for potential future problems. That’s one of the reasons why I chose MATE in the first place…

Finally installed 16.04 just hours ago replacing 14.04 on my main machine (yeah, I’m an old fart that still does desktops :grinning:). I do a lot in VirtualBox so added memory and disks/SSD. So far nVidia proprietary doing good.

Peripherals

2- Asus MX79H 27" IPS Monitors - I run one from DVI and the other HDMI - Cannot seem to get audio to play over HDMI
Epson WorkForce Pro - WF-4640 - works over USB, havnt had success using Wifi.
Logitec - Wireless MK710 Desktop Wireless Mouse and Keyboard - Runs great!!

Other than the few items listed above I have no other issues running this setup. Ubuntu Mate runs very fast and smooth.

Hi, New build for me from PCSpecialists. Just added a wide screen 34" monitor to top it off
UEFI set to “Other OS”
Currently running Peppermint OS or Manjaro xfce or Windows 10
and of course Mate 16.04
Runs like a dream.
