Brought up by @anon42388993 over in this topic was a suggestion to compare compiz settings.
But how to convey it? Below is my idea using compiz "Screenshot" where I can get all my CCSM selections in only 2 pictures. A regular screenshot can work, too.
I have reasonable stability with my settings but always wonder how much depends on having the right combo of harware and drivers, especially video.
I use Static Application Switcher (different than MATE default) and always turn off Grid. I make use of Place Windows and Window Rules for various things. Except for the Cube I use very little eye candy.

Hello guys, I have this configuration, I have it as it comes by default, I have only changed three things:
Dimm inactive ... the main window is normal and the windows inactive are something transparent,
Opacity, brightness and saturation, I added two lines of configuration, add some transparencies more, both to 90%
in my case if I put desktop cube, my left bar does not open when the mouse is near, I always have it hidden.Then I have desktop wall.
Ubuntu MATE 16.04.2, Mate Desktop 1.16
I use Mutiny, in some configurations it is unstable and it makes me fail other configurations, adding few changes goes well, sure that in layout Mate goes better and will be less unstable.

With this wallpaper the transparencies look better, the main window does not have transparencies, the secondary ones do have

It might be worth exporting the *.profile file:
The resulting .profile file is just a text -- copy and paste it and save it to something like lah7.profile. I said "yes" when it asked if I wanted to skip default values.
I haven't kept a firm track of my changes, but from what I can tell:
Turned off anything that caused Compiz to crash on my NVIDIA card.
Enable the cube.
Middle click the left or right edges to switch workspaces.
Changed colours and window snapping behaviour.
Resizing a window scales - feels less jittery then the default.

Well I had hoped that I could just import your profile and I did. But I cannot switch workspaces or enable the cube, so I guess one size will not fit all and further tweaking is necessary.

@anon42388993 , No problem with lah7-compiz-settings.profile but since about 5.1.18, VirtualBox likes to get host/guest confused with both hotkeys and mouse. A separate issue I believe (curious if anyone’s seen same?).
I wonder if “default” is a potential moving reference for some. I saved a complete profile and wow… 8 times bigger.
Anyone would have an example for a radeon graphic card with the free driver ?

Hi @Josele13 , Just wanted to let you know Dim inactive is now a part of my settings, thanks to you and @lah7 .
@Bernard_Tremblay , graphics drivers have been a constant struggle for compiz, unfortunately, going back many years.

I have been curious and opened Animations ..... you see a yellow lamp, click on minimize animation, then double click on the configuration line and another screen to edit, I put two arrows, there are different shapes above To minimize the windows and below the duration,
I have edited maximize, I have set (Zoom), and time 600,
it's much better now
