The volume/sound indicator has gone missing, Not sure if it’s something I have down or one of the many updates in the last day or two. I noticed it’s disappearance at around the same time as the arrival of the bluetooth indicator. The Bluetooth one is a little odd as my desktop PC has no bluetooth capability.
Just a quick sanity check at: System -> Preferences -> Personal -> Startup Applications
You can uncheck “Blueman Applet” since you don’t need Bluetooth.
Make sure “Volume Control” is checked. I think that’s what you’re missing.
Logout/in or reboot to see changes.
This may do nothing but worth a first check. I’m running 16.04 in a VM and just saw those 98 updates since yesterday but couldn’t reproduce your issue.

I posted on the G+ page and Martin suggested just changing theme and putting it back would resolve the issue.
By the thanks for reminding me about the Startup Application tool. Cleaned up a few things there.
