Switching Desktop Managers (WindowMaker)

Hi all,

First post, so here goes...

I want to run WindowMaker on Ubuntu MATE on the R Pi 3, and installed it following the instructions here:

But I can't seem to switch window managers: I don't get any of the options in the article (I created another user account to to enable the Log out / Log in option).

If I run wmaker from the Terminal, I get: 'usr/lib/WindowMaker/wmaker (Startup(startup.c:636): fatal : it seems that there is already a widow manager running'.

So WindowMaker seems to be installed correctly. So I went to kill LightGDM
(sudo service lightgdm stop), which I assumed would take me to a command
line, but all I got was a blinking white vertical bar, top left and no
ability to input text.

Any ideas? How do you switch between Desktop Managers in MATE?

TIA,

Tim

What for? You can logout/login without creating new user account.

I usually switch between them without creating a new account. Reboot your pc and try to select WindowMaker again If that didn't help, edit your ~/.xinitrc to load Window Maker using the line exec /usr/local/bin/wmaker .

From the Ubuntu help pages here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/shell-exit.html.en

"The Log Out and Switch User entries only appear in the menu if you have more than one user account on your system."

That's just the problem: when I reboot, I don't get any options for choosing WindowMaker, only the option to switch user accounts... can we insert images into replies so you can see what I'm getting?
