Trouble using exFAT

Hi, I was trying to use my exFAT External SSD to transfer files between Ubuntu and Windows. However, Ubuntu couldn't recognise the file system. After some research I found that exFAT is not installed by default, so I tried to install a driver but was unable to do so.
I'm using Ubuntu 24.04

install 'exfat-fuse'

by either terminal:

sudo apt install exfat-fuse

or by using a GUI based installer of your choice

Is that it? and do I have to restart?

no, you don't need to restart.

In that case I already tried that but it still hasn't worked

On my rig it works immediately after installing exfat-fuse
no idea why it does not work on yours.

Let's get to the bottom of this:

  1. unplug the disk
  2. reboot
  3. login again
  4. connect the disk again

You should now be able to read and write to the disk.

if it fails:

  1. insert an empty USB-stick
  2. format it as ex-fat using 'disks'
  3. test it:
if it fails -> something is wrong with your install
if it succeeds -> something is wrong with your disk

you might want to use 'disks' to check the disk for errors.

I don't know if this will help but when trying to format it to FAT on my Ubuntu desktop I get this error

.

It seems to me that you have way bigger problems than "not being able to read exFAT".

I don't know the history behind this disk but if this disk is really exFAT, mount it on MS-Windows and do a diskcheck.
After the check, safely remove the disk before you logout/shutdown.

I got it from here.

You mean it is new and empty ?
In that case do a disk format to get rid of both partitions

  1. choose GPT as partitiontable
  2. create one partition spanning the whole disk (align on 1MiB)
  3. fast format exFAT

Oh I forgot one thing:
According to the link you provided, the 4TB-ssd did cost you £29.97
The usual marketprice is more than tenfold this amount.
I have a slight feeling that something is fishy here.
