Ubuntu 16.04 Mate 1.12.1 freezing

My system freezes again...no use of mouse, keyboard, etc. I see all of the windows on the screen, but can't do anything with them. I've tried different Ctrl+Alt combinations to no avail. Previously Ctrl+Alt+F8 followed by Ctrl+Alt+F7 would allow me to regain control over the system, but not now.

System: Host: larry-ThinkPad-E555 Kernel: 4.4.0-34-generic x86_64 (64 bit)
Desktop: MATE 1.12.1 Distro: Ubuntu 16.04 xenial

Quick question Larry

Your recent trouble with Kali. Was that with your host or your guest system. I ask because you have several problems going on and you just may be better off backing up your files and doing a fresh install.

The Kali was on my main system…but i’ve done a fresh install of ubuntu since then.

how did you create your install media and did you follow this advice as it sounds like an input/output error when copying system files to the system during install to me?:

My iso for installing ubuntu mate onto my computer is on a usb drive.

I heard that buntu 16.04 doesn't like ATI anymore

Problem # 1: There are known ACPI problems in Lenovo's BIOS code.

and

You might want to try the kernel option "acpi_enforce_resources=lax" to get around some of the problems. If the ACPI code in the BIOS really sets up two different pieces of hardware at overlapping addresses then that is bad news.

To add the kernel option you would edit "/etc/default/grub" and add "acpi_enforce_resources=lax" to either GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= or GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=.

There have been a number of kernel bug reports opened about Lenovo hardware.

Problem # 2:

You have virtualization disabled in the BIOS somewhere. I've seen different BIOS call the option many different things often with no clue that the option affects virtualization. I'm not sure what side effects could occur loading virtualbox drivers with hardware virtualization disabled.

I edited the grub file and added "acpi_enforce_resources=lax" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=

Then i did a grub-update.

I changed my BIOS to allow virtualization.

Does my video drive look ok or should i not use the proprietary one?

Also, one of my startup apps MATE NVIDIA Optimus, which shows a tray icon when a compatible NVIDIA Optimus graphics card is detected. Do i need that as a startup app?

You don’t need NVIDIA Optimus, you have a Radeon GPU.

Your video driver should be “amdgpu”. You can look in the Xorg.0.log with the System Log Viewer to see what driver gets loaded. Either Radeon or AMDGPU would be OK. My AMD A8 uses the Radeon driver. From the info you provided it looks like your video is OK.
