Ubuntu MATE 14.10 sound problems

Hello,
I am a new user of Ubuntu MATE. I have used Ubuntu since 5.04, and now I missed the good old GUI so I decided to try out MATE

However, I cannot get the sound to work; I have a built-in soundcard and a ASUS Xonar DG PCI card, and I want to use the PCI card as default output. This works fine under Ubuntu with Unity, so I know that the card works under Linux - but no matter what I choose under MATE, the default card ends ut being the built in one.

Any suggestions?

See the screen shot below. Turn Off the sounds card you are not using.

If that doesn't work try installing the PulseAudio Volume Control.

sudo apt-get install pavucontrol

I tried deactivating the other devices and also install PulseAudio Volume
Control. The left and right speaker “bars” are moving, but no audio is
coming out.

Can you run the command aplay -l in a terminal and post the output?

Here is the output:

lassen@mons:~$ aplay -l

I finally got it to work

I tried to put some headphone in the front audio jack, and that worked - so the audio was playing, just out of the wrong port.
Then I played around in alsamixer and found a setting there called “Analog out”. If i pressed the up arrow there, it would change from “Analog Output [Stereo Headphones FP]” to “Analog Output [multichannel]”, and that was it.

Still don’t know exactly what I did here, but at least I have sound now. Thanks for all help
