Great news Martin. Glad to hear HiDPI support is coming - at the moment lack of HiDPI support means not being able to select the nicest panels in the latest equipment. I'm also glad the GTK3 issues won't be affecting me, given I use the straight application/places/system layout.
Got a question - all this fancy stuff they're doing in gnome 3 with buttons in the window dressing, and menus hear there and everywhere (well, coming from buttons, from the top of the screen and from menus) - how will that affect the way these programs display and function in MATE?
Thanks again for all the hard work - it's a great distro.

Whats the difference between Mate Menu and Gnome Main Menu? Show it as screenshoot, please? Is Gnome Main Menu classic triple-button menu?

It means, what Applications-Places-System menu will be supported in Ubuntu Mate 16.10?

Martin, thank you for writing an articulate and frequently updated blog. Other 'classic' desktop environment dev teams would do well to emulate this practice.
Since Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and Debian Jessie have arrived I've been trying to catch up on MATE development. My dim memory recalls that 'someones' desktop menu had the ability to separate and/or hide the old Gnome 2 categories Applications, Places, and System.
Will this ability be included in the new MATE menu; if not, why not?
I'll be watching the available MATE themes as I've found that I prefer some GTK2 themes that use less white space; an bad GTK3 example would be Cinnamon that has needlessly huge icons and taskbars IMO.
TIA, Mike
I am so looking forward to this! Does this mean all popular themes would work w/o any hack?

To fix your GCalculator snap app, you only have to install proper fontconfig stuff and generate caches, so that they're in proper XDG data dirs.
You can see an example wrapper script here (check the yaml for the deps too): http://bazaar.launchpad.net...
Or similar in the gnome-calculator snap: http://bazaar.launchpad.net...

I hope that migration to GTK3 also brings Wayland support closer. The major desktops are all gearing up for Wayland support and MATE should be among them.

Things are heating up. Snaps, GTK3 and so on. I don't think anyone will miss Gnome Main Menu. But I really miss Fog icon theme. It was great with TraditionalOk GTK theme.

I just switched to Mate from Gnome with the 16.04 release primarily because it supports X2GO. This sounds like the kind of change that will break MATE with X2GO too. Crap.

This is wonderful news. UM 16.04 is the BEST OS I have ever used; if only Ubuntu 8.04 had been half as good.
