Ubuntu Mate 17.10 problems with Nvidia

Hi everybody,
I have installed Ubuntu Mate 17.10 64bit fresh new onto my machine, an Asus X83Vm-X2, which sports a Nvidia GeForce 9600M GS video card, but regardless of my tries, the Nvidia drivers provided with the distro (340.104 or 304.137) are not working. My laptop freezes after a while, sometimes everything is frozen except the mouse, sometimes it glitches, etc. I tried to remove and reinstall the drivers manually from the Nvidia site, apply the patch provided here at https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1025051/fully-working-patches-2-of-them-for-nvidia-driver-340-104-compiler-installer-file-and-linux-kernels-4-13-amp-4-14/ but still nothing, the card isn’t working. With the 16.04 64bit I had no problems but I wouldn’t like to go back because I need the updated version. So, any advice/help? I am struggling with it since the first of January (happy new year!), I am searching high and low but I can’t find a solution, anyone can help? Thanks!
