Ubuntu Mate 20.04+Raspberry Pi 4 Model B+Android Phone hotspot: Q. How to tether?

I'm looking for a step-by-step guide to set up a Raspberry Pi 4 to connect to the Internet by tethering (WiFi or USB) to an Android phone.

My guesses are:

  1. enable tethering on the phone
  2. scan for the phone from the Pi
  3. connect to the discovered result
which I think will involve getting an
IP address on the phone's hotspot
    "network"
  4. profit

If anyone does this routinely, I would, as I'm sure a good number of other poor sods would, appreciate learning your system.

Thank you. (from all of us)

That process looks right. I had occasion to be using my amdroid phone to provide internet while my landline connection was lost, and I believe this was one of the ways I got to continue my bridge sessions and sminars (using RPi4).

Thanks, Derek.

I've since learned that without a data plan in place I cannot begin the experiment. The tether option on my phone is disabled. :^(

I had naively planned to try USB-tethering the RPi4B to my LAN through the phone's wireless, but tethering must mean only sharing the cellular connection.

Too bad for me.

This means I will have to ship the unit unconfigured to the non-technical recipient, so a clearest-possible how-to (like for a gramma) would still be Very Helpful Indeed.

I'm not clear on exactly you want to achieve.
Why don't you configure it ar home, take it to site, and there adjust the configuration for local conditions?
