Ubuntu MATE 23.10 is (now) end-of-life - 11 July 2024

If you’re still using Ubuntu MATE 23.10 (or any other Ubuntu 23.10 or 23.10 flavor), please be warned that EOL warnings are out; meaning you’re now in the days of supported life.

Ubuntu announced its 23.10 (Mantic Minotaur) release almost 9 months ago, on October 12, 2023 and its support period is now nearing its end. Ubuntu 23.10 will reach end of life on July 11, 2024.

At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include information or updated packages for Ubuntu 23.10.

The supported upgrade path from Ubuntu 23.10 is via Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

So if you’re using 23.10 still, please plan your release-upgrade somewhat soon, and start by reading the Ubuntu MATE 24.04 LTS release notes, or Ubuntu 24.04 LTS release notes which have some release-upgrade pointers.

Upgrading to Ubuntu MATE 24.04

The upgrade process to Ubuntu MATE 24.04 LTS from either Ubuntu MATE 22.04 LTS or 23.10 is the same as Ubuntu.

There are no offline upgrade options for Ubuntu MATE. Please ensure you have network connectivity to one of the official mirrors or to a locally accessible mirror and follow the instructions above.

When will 22.04 lose support?

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS being a LTS comes with five years of standard support for Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server .. and three years for Ubuntu flavors like Ubuntu-MATE. That is expressed in release announcements, such as

Maintenance updates will be provided for 5 years from the initial 22.04 LTS release for Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Cloud, and Ubuntu Core. All the remaining flavours will be supported for 3 years. Additional security support is available with ESM (Expanded Security Maintenance).

If you enable ESM or Ubuntu Pro, those security updates will continue for a further 5 years, and can also be extended a further two if you add the optional legacy support; giving the potential for 12 years of support.

Ubuntu-MATE however being a flavor however, is fully supported for 3 years, so until 2025-April (ie. 3 years from initial launch in April 2022)

Your system will continue to receive updates after April 2025 as at its core, your Ubuntu MATE is a Ubuntu product, thus the Ubuntu packages get security fixes (packages from main) for 5 years, so you needn't really worry until 2027-April, but asking on sites like here, after MATE supports ends in April 2025 maybe uncouth.

I wrote about this recently on a support site; so I'll provide a link here; much the same detail using different words relating to 20.04 flavor that was EOL. Sites like askubuntu allow flavor support questions for the five years of standard support.

For what its worth i`m currently running 20.04.6 LTS with Ubuntu Pro enabled and will receive updates to both the Main and Universe until 2030. The system is running well and didn't want to update just for the sake of it !!

Final end of life notices are now out too.

The closure of the repository was delayed a little; so some cleaning & other processes could complete for mantic, but all that completed & the archive/release is now fully closed.
