Ubuntu mate 24.04 6.8.0-41-generic + dell M4800 + docking station won't start

Hi.
After upgrading from 22.04 (big mistake from my part), when I start the laptop docked with the lid closed, the screen on my external monitor freezes after login and I have to long press power button to shut down and start the laptop with the lid open or undocked (to start properly).

Also I noticed errors and prompts to send error to ubuntu after upgrading.
Also the startup logo is distorted with rainbow colored horizontal lines in the bottom when I start the laptop but that does not prevent it from startting.

I use nouveau video driver.

some output from

dmesg | less

after the successfull start.

In 22.04 this did not happen.

@marius-ciclistu: Just as a fun fact.

We have Linux Mint in the office, version 21.3 "Virginia" (Edge) based on Ubuntu 22.04.

None of the notebooks we have in the office (HP and Dell) will start if connected to the docking-station with the lid closed.

You have to make sure you:

  • start the notebook with the lid open and connected to the docking-station (it may work most of the times), or
  • start the notebook and when Linux is started, connect to the docking-station

Don't know why, don't know if upgrading to the new Linux Mint (v 22 "Wilma") will fix this issue.

By the way, I'm the only one in the office who refused a notebook and still using a normal PC (I really hate notebooks since I first got in contact with notebooks - 1996! -, keyboard too small, touchpad = for me unusable, meaning I require a mouse, display = too small, fan = too loud if doing something productive => I prefer a PC, even if others laugh about me... but, at the age of 53+ I have no problem with their opinion).

And yes, my "daily driver" is a PC (i5-12400) with a 43" monitor... and I'm happy with it.

@radax05 For me it worked in 22.04. What a fool I've been to upgrade to 24.04 before 26.04 is out on one of my laptops....

It works with lid open but still. I used to work on it with 2 monitors without opening the lid.

I opened another question here mate - Ubuntu 24.04 stopped starting docked with lid closed vs 22.04 - Ask Ubuntu
