Thank you, @Wimpy, for this. I actually came here to post about something I'd observed in the Ubuntu MATE 24.10 beta, but I'm downloading the "official" ISO as I type this, so hopefully everything is OK now. However, in the name of feedback and wanting to help, I will share what I found here. See picture below. (You know what they say - a picture is worth a thousand words.) I also will share that I still saw the boundary line around the Inhibit Applet icon when I first installed the beta (but that stopped happening after a reboot, though ... ? I didn't spend too long with the beta). In any case, I hope the "official" ISO has everything fixed. Thank you so much again. I sincerely mean that. I think MATE by itself has the best desktop design. Want to see a bug-free MATE desktop. Nothing wrong with that. Keep it up.

Don't know what else to say. I've done all I can as an end user and advocate for MATE. I've reported the bug on Launchpad. I've reported it on this forum. I e-mailed you. Yeah. I honestly don't know why this is happening or why it hasn't been fixed. I'm gonna keep using Linux Mint as my daily driver until MATE is fixed. Until then, I'm done. I truly am. Thank you.

Sorry for the novice question, but I tried the update process but it said there is no new LTS version. My understanding is the regular release schedule is every 6mos while LTS is every 2 years. Is it worth it to switch to this version or should I stick with the LTS version? Is it just a matter of preference?

Generally speaking, if you don't have a reason to update, then you probably shouldn't.

Reasons you might is newer hardware, specific functionality needed, etc.

I don't normally install non LTS versions but have for newer hardware and a raspberry pi image that had performance that leapfrogged the current (at the time) LTS.

Nice find - I can see how that would be annoying! I'm just about to install 24.04, I'm always slow to upgrade and I stick (mostly) to LTS releases.

I hope the bug you identified can be fixed soon. I know it can be a painful wait and for what seems like low-hanging fruit (that wasn't a problem before).

Open source is extremely cut-throat. There's a business side to it that seems to go under-acknowledged. Projects can go stale if they don't have enough traction with users and funding sources (either funding from users, public funds, or private investment/partnerships). It's not pretty. With Manjaro dropping its community MATE edition, there are signs its a rocky road ahead.

I'm incredibly grateful to have Ubuntu MATE. If it can't be sustained without unreasonable sacrifice on the part of the team - then I hope that means something just as excellent has taken its place.

Why do I see this in my top panel ??
The 3 white circles on the right

Panel

W

Those white circles are the keylock indicators (capslock, numlock, scrollock)

You can remove them if you want to, or change the color by choosing a different icon-theme

I wouldn't pay attention to that, the truth is that I could only see it with a magnifying glass , in fact that error doesn't appear on my computer with Ubuntu Mate LTS

Thanks for replying. Sorry for the late response, too. Yeah. Honestly, if this was any other bug that I could rectify on my own by figuring out a workaround or could ignore if it was tucked far enough deep within the OS, then I wouldn't probably say anything. Or just mention it or make a simple bug report, and move on. But with this specific bug, it is so "in-your-face" and interferes with the general enjoyment of the OS itself. I felt compelled to be assertive about the whole thing and saying something. I'm shocked it wasn't spotted before release. Or addressed. I don't know. But it's there. It's there all the time. Very annoying and disruptive. Disappointed that @Wimpy hasn't said anything about it, or taken any (apparent) action. (Emphasis: "apparent.")

I hope they fix it, though. Time will tell.

If MATE really isn't working out for you, perhaps pivot to Cinnamon. I know that Mint (obviously) has Cinnamon - and is similar to Ubuntu, and Debian has a Cinnamon ISO, too. There's also Arch-based distributions with Cinnamon, e.g. Manjaro.

There is Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Cinnamon, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Unity, and Xubuntu besides Ubuntu Mate. Plus like Mint and Zorin there are plenty of other Ubuntu based OS's with different desktops.

One should be able to find an Ubuntu desktop that works well for them and they like. Good Luck. The only thing I will add is you won't find another Forum as good as this one.
