Ubuntu MATE 25.04

I always load and test the new versions of Ubuntu MATE in a VM and report bugs and other issues. I got a mail from OMG Ubuntu stating that 25.04 was available for testing. I checked the MATE download page and it still only shows 24.10 Oracular. Any one know when the MATE build will be out and available for testing? (I am an eager beaver! LOL!)

The only official notice I've seen about plucky so far is that its open for development.

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2024-October/043164.html

This install is still on oracular, as I have no capacity yet to do-release-upgrade -d to switch myself to plucky, but as the Ubuntu Summit only just occurred, and usually Canonical have a week of sprints etc following that (whilst they're all at the same location), I'm not worried if I don't see anything until next week.

As for dailies, I wouldn't worry about them for another couple of weeks, as there would be too little difference between oracular and plucky currently anyway.

Yeah I know I could force my box to upgrade to plucky, but I'm trying to not do that & be patient; as https://changelogs.ubuntu.com/meta-release-development will be edited once its ready

It's moving on...

Since my last post on this thread (~two hours ago), the meta-release-development file has been modified and now shows 25.04 !! I'll soon be on plucky myself.

thanks for posting that! Helping with bug reports user experience etc, is how I help Ubuntu MATE Devs in my own little way. For some reason (I think this solves it for me), is that I ache to keep trying something new and using a VM allows me to also muck around with that version as well as install software without touching my daily host install.

Thanks, I'm doing that -- nothing to lose as is VM

Not an issue, but as far as I know this is still actually just 24.10

Following this topic as I might be interested in downloading a beta of 25.04 and trying it out in a VM.

Looks like you can download an ISO as per the instructions on ubuntu-mate.org (if you have an Ubuntu SSO - go straight here and look within Plucky Daily).

This is informational only.

Ubuntu [MATE] plucky is still in alpha, with beta freeze scheduled for 24 March 2025, and beta release scheduled for 27 March 2025, so if you want the beta you'll need to wait awhile.

The alpha images are available as dailies, refer to detail provided earlier by @stephematician, and once installed, you can update the system normally, and your system will turn into the beta days before the beta release, and likewise turn into the released product a few days before its actual release.

Alpha releases are not stable, you may need to use apt full-upgrade on occasion (not just apt upgrade), and your file-system may end up containing some unnecessary files (used during QA alpha/beta) that won't exist on an install made with stable or released images; these will not impact anything, but may use some disk space (it'll be small).

Absolutely. I understand now it is alpha but just was something I wanted to check out in a VM for my own curiosity.

Thanks

Is there already a list of new features that we could help testing?
