Ubuntu Mate Auto-Login Window Manager Only

I would like to be able to start a window manager only, then run a gui app. In other words I do not want to run a desktop at all. This is for a kiosk application.

Maybe I am going about this the wrong way so I am open to suggestions. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Ubuntu Server + Openbox

Or, if you are feeling lazy:

Lubuntu. but only log into the openbox session

Having once logged in, have the app set to open automatically at login by adding it to your list of startup apps
