Ubuntu Software Center in Ubuntu MATE 15.10

Hello there,

I just came across an article saying that with Ubuntu MATE 15.10 the Ubuntu Software Center is to be abolished. Can anyone tell me why that is?

Greetings,
Suffice

I think people find it slow and buggy. Usually on my remove (disable) list.

It could be installed if you like.

It’s not going to be “abolished”. It’s merely not going to be included as standard on installation. There is bound to be something that will replace it and I am pretty sure Wimpy will make it very easy to install the software center immediately following installation for anyone who still wants it,

Hi steve

The python version shows promise, but looks to need some more work.

The Ubuntu Sofware Center (USC) and Appgrid can be installed from Ubuntu MATE Welcome. So you get to choose. You can either use USC, Appgrid or just plain Synaptic.

All this talk of Ubuntu Software Centre’s demise are greatly exaggerated.

As other’s has commented USC is installable via Ubuntu MATE Welcome, which you can now test in Ubuntu MATE 15.10 Beta 1 which added support for installing your choice of “software center”

Thank you very much for your replies!

Could you think to make the same with LibreOffice and Adobe Flashplugin ?

Adobe Flash is in Welcome

Will that be the final design? A choice of software center in the Welcome screen...
I find it confusing: to download a software to download software from a download software place in a Welcome screen... not obvious.

I would just use synaptic, hopefullly canonical will change its mind about this move to snappy as that will make 16.04 a broken mess.

People new to linux will have a problem. I really think synaptic should be default. People can find out how versicle this package manager is from the start.

A “recommended” remark linked to ONE option would help new Linux users.

I have been getting used to using the software center - how do I re-instate It?? - in simple instruction please - not everyone is au-fait with the intricacies of Linux.

Open a terminal (you can open a terminal by going to applications/system tools/mate terminal or by pressing F12 if you have Tilda installed and running) and enter the following command:

sudo apt-get install software-center

That’s it.

You can install it via the Software section of Ubuntu MATE Welcome.

Not on my version of Welcome on the Pi !
John

Have you tried installing it from the terminal?

sudo apt-get install software-center
