Where’s my Ubuntu Software Center?
It is not preinstalled. You can install it through the terminal.
sudo apt install ubuntu-softwarecenter
maybe the package name is not exactly right. If this package can’t be found run
sudo apt search ubuntu software center
then you’ll find the correct one.
Hope it helped
Mickey
The package name seems to be ubuntu-software. I’m not sure it’s still really developed, though, I think Ubuntu has switched to GNOME Software (or am I mistaken?).
Anyway, on Ubuntu MATE, you have the Software Boutique which is an equivalent (and better made IMO). If you upgraded from a previous Ubuntu version, it’s not preinstalled, you have to manually install the missing snap packages:
snap install ubuntu-mate-welcome --classic
snap install software-boutique --classic
snap install pulsemixer
Welcome and the Software Boutique will then be available in the Control Center. Note that in my case, the Boutique doesn’t start (I’ve opened another thread about this), I have to launch Welcome and go in the Softwares section.
I’ve already put 16.04 back on that machine…I’ll wait 6 months before I try again, I’ve got all SSDs on my machines and don’t feel like wearing them out with unnecessary format/writes…I knew better than to install a new LTS before the bugs were worked out of it, but Win8 ate my grub menu during one of it’s updates…
Without USC very little downloaded from the web installs properly, and the boutique doesn’t install Chrome or Opera properly. Boutique also resembles a Venezuelan supermarket when compared to USC and all of it’s package options.
Another good alternative to install, remove or search software is definitely
synaptic package manager
All in all what program you choose is purely a matter of taste
I totally agree…, the Ubuntu Software Center is a necessary item and I am sad they have left it off in LTS Mate Bionic., We tried Bionic but I am moving back to LTS 16 series for this and other reasons. Will probably stay there until end of support period. Not crazy about Synaptic (which is a needed tool and offers so much in the way of libraries, etc…) although it is good; however, USC felt like the software installs went much easier., And very bothered by the fact you cannot drive via command to the repository and just download USC…,
Found this concerning the Ubuntu Software Center to be replaced by Gnome Software
