UM 18.04 error message after safely removing drive

After doing a fresh install of 18.04 on an old Dell laptop, I continue to get error messages subsequent to safely removing a Western Digital Passport usb drive. This morning, I plugged it in and then safely removed it at 9:19AM. At 10:30, this message appeared.

Got any ideas on troubleshooting? I usually unplug the drive late at night and am greeted with the error message when opening the lid in the morning.

Edit: I am reasonably sure that this is a bug in caja but not totally sure. Google-fu has not helped me...

Edit 2: Syslog says this about that -

FYI, I am seeing this as well. Same error message, “Unable to stop drive Timeout was reached,” delayed for a period of time after safely removing a Western Digital USB drive. Also occurs with an HP USB drive. At first, I thought it had something to do with installing TLP. I changed the setting:

tlp USB_AUTOSUSPEND=0

but it did not prevent the error.

Now that I read @mdooley’s post, I know that was not the cause.

More messages like this continue to appear. Does not appear to be a caja bug but instead related to something in the kernel. I think…

This morning, I plugged in and unplugged three external drives, a 2 Gb WD Passport Ultra, a 1 Gb WD Passport Ultra and a SSHD contained within an Inateck USB case. I got three Unable to stop drive messages after safely removing each of them. The two WD drives are NTFS formatted as received from the vendor and the Inateck is formatted ext4, with a 120 Gb Samsung 840 EVO flash drive within.

I’m posting just as an update. No support nor help expected. Below is more from Syslog - really too much to read. Knock yourselves out.

I see it too, but only after a long time - at least 30 minutes after removing external drive. I doubt it is a bug in Caja, because I saw it in Thunar (from Xubuntu) also.

Like you, I get this message long after I’ve removed the external drive. I no longer think its a bug in Caja but suspect that it is a kernel bug. I’ll go about reporting it after I’m finished with a server update to 18.04. Thanks @Spyder. And thanks to @goinglinux Larry too.

@mdooley, I can confirm that I get one message for each drive I connect and disconnect. I haven’t timed it, but there is about a 20-30 minute delay between disconnection and error message. Interestingly, when I put my laptop into suspend after disconnecting a drive, whether the computer is asleep for 20 minutes or 3 hours, the delay seems to be a countdown that is suspended while the laptop is suspended. This might support your suspicion that it is a kernel bug rather than a problem in the application layer.

Removed a WD Passport USB drive last night and got the following from syslog1 this morning (after getting the error message):

May 11 22:32:36 D830 gvfs-udisks2-vo[1700]: gvfs_udisks2_drive_stop_finish: assertion 'g_async_result_is_tagged (result, gvfs_udisks2_drive_stop)' failed

Appears to be a failure of gvfs.

Edit: reported as bug - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mate/+bug/1770857

Note that umount /media/michael/"drivename" seems to work in avoiding the “Unable to stop drive” message.

Edit: Also note that simply pulling the USB extension cable out of the USB port avoids the error message. For what it’s worth…

I received a message this morning noting that this bug is a duplicate and that a patch is in the works. Please see - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunar/+bug/1762595

gvfs 1.36.1-0ubuntu1.1 seems to have fixed this in Ubuntu MATE 18.04. To get this upstream patch, I enabled Pre-released updates (bionic proposed) in Software & Updates and then applied only the gvfs .debs in Synaptic. No more Timeout was reached messages.
