UM 24.04.3 on a Dell Inspiron 3593

This is short note to report some good news. – I am helping a recently widowed friend with her technology. The most recent project was a migration from Windows 10 to UM 24.04.3 on her Inspiron 3593 laptop (purchased about 2021). I’m glad to report that the migration went smoothly. It is a pleasure to see how well this software works on a fairly new machine.

I have had really bad experiences with the UM installer on other older machines, and I was prepared to install another distro that uses the calamares installer. However, in this case, I defaulted my way through the installer and did not stress it, and it worked well. I do hope that it is improved in the future for more complicated scenarios (or replaced).

In the end, all is well, and I thought that I would report some good news.

Indeed Ubuntu Mate 24.04 did originally have problems with it's installer. I got it installed after many tries on my laptop by finally going to a DVD. Also tried to install it on my brother and his wife's desktop and failed. As I lived out of town I finally put 22.04 on their desktop. I was a bit embarrassed after bragging Ubuntu Mate up to them.

The good news it has been solved for quite a while and the installer works correctly now. Personally I prefer it over the Calamari installers I have used on other OS's.

Thanks for spreading Linux, especially Ubuntu Mate!
