I have this set up as a startup application.
However, to receive any updates I have to manually start.
Does this not notify automatically as it does in Ubuntu?

Check the settings in the updates tab. There are separate selections for how to handle "security" and "other" updates. I'm not sure what the defaults are but here is how I set mine.
And I know from experience "Download automatically" also notifies immediately.
