Updating from 16.04 to 18.04

When 18.04 is released will I be able to update from 16.04 to 18.04 directly?

I’m a bit confused and just want to be prepared for when that time comes along (although it’s quite a while yet).

So basically, when the time comes will I be able to:

sudo apt dist-upgrade

after a bit of repo altering?

Yeah, it should show up in your updater when 18.04.1 becomes available (first point release since the 18.04 release)

Oh awesome, so I won’t have to alter anything?

thank you

No, LTS to LTS upgrades are the safest there is.
You should however take care to maintain a backup, in the unlikely event something goes wrong.
You should also be able to manually trigger the upgrade before the first point release if you want, but the reason the updater waits until the first point release to advertise the upgrade is that it allows for bugs to be fixed following reports by the early adopters.

Yeah I’ll stick to standard procedure. I have the system personalised How I like it so I don’t want to mess anything up. I’ll happily wait a month or two for 18.04.1

Thanks for your help and for replying so quickly!!
