Upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04 Won't Offer "Upgrade" Option

I’m looking forward to using the 18.04 release, and I was hoping to try updating to the latest release using the instructions found in the 18.04 release notes. However, I can’t get either option to offer the update.

  1. I have switched the option under the “3rd tab” to “Long-term support versions.”

  2. I tried running the update-manager but it just reports that my system is up to date.

  3. I tried running /usr/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/check-new-release-gtk but that never starts. In the terminal I get the following error:

/usr/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/check-new-release-gtk:30: PyGIWarning: Gtk was imported without specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version(‘Gtk’, ‘3.0’) before import to ensure that the right version gets loaded. from gi.repository import Gtk

  4. I also tried running `/usr/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/check-new-release which returns the message “No new release found.”

Any thoughts?

This may actually have the opposite effect of delaying the upgrade showing up until 18.04.1 is released

Have you tried update-manager -c -d ?

No @elcste, I haven’t tried that command. I was specifically trying to follow the “18.04 Release Announcement” instructions. Those instructions said specifically to make that change in the upgrade tab. I could just wipe the machine and do a clean install, but I’ve never tried an in place upgrade in the Ubuntu family so I thought I would give it a try. Since there were detailed instructions in the “18.04 Release Announcement” I thought I could follow those to do an in place upgrade. Those instructions didn’t mention that I would have to wait until 18.04.1 before those instructions would work, but perhaps that was what Wimpy meant to say.

I will explore the command you gave ‘update-manager -c -d’ so I understand the function of those flags.

Other options:

  1. I could do a clean install with a downloaded ISO.
  2. I could wait for the release of 18.04.1 and see if that triggers the Release Announcement instructions to work.

Just thought I would mention this in case others try the 18.04 Release Announcement instructions and also don’t get the in place upgrade to work. Have a great day.

I did read the release notes, but I admit I skipped the install part since I had already installed during the beta period :stuck_out_tongue: I did not mean to cause confusion!

As for update-manager -c -d, here’s how the man page explains it: the -c means “Check if a new distribution release is available”, ie check for an upgrade, not just the normal updates. The -d means “If using the latest supported release, upgrade to the development release”. This is how you can upgrade before a version is released, and since there isn’t a new version under development quite yet, it should show you the 18.04 upgrade. (And you get a chance to cancel before installing just in case!)

I also tried the update manager command, update-manager -c -d, which only worked as expected after I changed the third tab in ‘Software and Updates’ to “Notify me of a new Ubuntu version - For any new version”. “For long-term support versions” kept the command in complete ignorance of the new 18.04 release as you said. And I did not have to upgrade either. Thanks elcste for a great explanation.

My daughters PC is stuck on 17.10 and hasn’t offered an upgrade to 18.04 option yet. The updater says it is up-to-date. But it’s still 17.10. I can’t see any Upgrade button anywhere. I see there is a command line way to do this. But I’m looking for the easy GUI way, which I believe must exist for non IT trained people. Does anyone know where to look? Thanks.

If you are not willing to use the method described here -

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BionicBeaver/ReleaseNotes

or the one described by elcaste in this thread, you will have to wait until 18.04.1 is released July 26th. Good luck ianp5a.

Edit: In 17.10, I tried using update-manager -c -d as described in my May 1 post above, but it did not work as expected. I made sure that "Notify me of a new Ubuntu version - For any new version" was set in the third tab of Software and Updates and rebooted just to be sure.

What did work was to use this command - /usr/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/check-new-release-gtk which immediately led me to a GUI prompt asking me if I wanted to upgrade to 18.04.

Edit 2: I declined the upgrade offer (instead of clicking on 'Ask Me Later') and now, when trying to use the above command, I get this message:

WARNING:root:found new dist 'bionic' but it is on the ignore list

I wonder how I can weasel out of this situation?

Edit 3: To correct this ignore list business, I clicked on Control Center, and then on Software Updater. It displayed the following:

Clicking on Upgrade.. displayed an authenticate dialog box where I was asked for my password. Then the following dialog box was displayed.

You can update if you want. I didn't as I don't really need to.

Thought you ought to know...

Thanks. We’ll wait. That’s a relief. There was no upgrade offered as mentioned in your edit 2.

Edit: Today the Upgrade pop up finally arrived. Strange about the 6 week delay, but happy and upgrading to 18.04 now.

What was the reason to delay to Upgrade notification to 18.04.01?

I would still expect there to be a button that is permanently available once an upgrade is ready. It’s presence would indicate that an upgrade is ready. And would save people searching for some way to upgrade. It would be easy for non IT experienced/non command line users, to know how to Upgrade. A notification in the notification area would also make it obvious to users an upgrade is available.

Hello.
I am current running Ubuntu Mate 17.10, but would like to upgrade to the latest version 18.10. I have found the Upgrade screens shown just above, but when I hit the 'upgrade' button the upgrade fails whilst 'calculating changes' with the following message

I suspect that I must have some 'Unofficial Software Packages not provided by Ubuntu' and that is probably what is preventing my system from successfully installing the upgrade.
Does anybody out there know how I could identify these packages (is there perhaps a command that will list the unofficial packages so that I can uninstall them), or if there is some other way around this problem.

Thanks,
Andrew
