USB camera not recognised

Hi,

Neither in Ubuntu or Windows 10 can I see the USB camera, any ideas? It says in Windows 10 it had some error saying device description would not respond to words of that effect and when I go into Ubuntu it wont show up in file manager however it is listed here as a "Flash USB Disk":

home@Home:~$ lsusb

The device doesn't come with any software in the box so presumably should just be recognised as a external storage device?

Previously I had a lot of issues getting a standard webcam to work on Ubuntu, is Ubuntu poor for webcams or am I just buying cheap crap where no real support is available? I installed cheese web cam software but that could not see it either. Thanks in advance.

Suggestion: sudo apt-get install guvcview

you can search the web for "softech web camera ubuntu"

Well this program hasn't worked either, it and cheese don't recognise any camera device. Strange, its not a big issue I can move the data chip out of it into a card reader on the pc but just strange I cant film stuff with it. I did have a lot of issues a couple of years ago getting my other webcam working and that had a very popular brand name as well. That too has the same lsusb issue, it could see it attached but would not use it.

I had a problem with Cheese too. I am now using Webcamoid with no problem. You could try that, but when I had the problem with Cheese both Webcamoid and guvcview found my camera.
