When I double click this, it opens quickly.
But when I use this, it uses 100% of CPU and half of ram, yet it never opens the 68 Mb pdf file?

I use this commands for other smaller files with no problemos.

I have done the same time for both cases my side trying to reproduce the issue.
Are you on a external mount point like cifs or nfs ?
Maybe one of the method is copying the file locally before editing and the other is opening it remotely and saving a edit file also remotely.
btw 70Mb for a pdf is enormous. Try opening with a web browser or with atril.
But why can thunar open it so quickly, it makes no sense.
It was on a separate drive, so I copied it to my local drive.
It was still slow opening.
One of those mysteries.
I found out that using Atril document viewer works.
