Hey! I’m getting Ubuntu MATE set up for the first time and working on customizing my desktop a bit. Here are some issues and questions I have that I thought I’d put together instead of spamming multiple posts. If you can answer even just one of them that would be great.
For the dock, I can right click it and go into preferences. I then went to the ‘Docklets’ section and added the Battery and Clippy. The battery always shows an empty battery symbol even if this is not true (despite the fact that MATE correctly knows my laptop battery in every other situation). Also, I have found no way to remove these Docklets from my Dock if I don’t want them anymore.
In MATE Tweaks, I have tried turning on ‘Enable HUD’ but I have never been able to get the HUD to work. I’ve tried Alt L and I’ve tried changing the key combination to something else via ‘HUD Settings’ but nothing works to get it to open for me.
Out of curiosity, in MATE Tweaks, what does ‘Enable keyboard LED’ do exactly? When I hover over it, it says “Show keyboard LED indicators in the notification area’ but I don’t know exactly what that means. I didn’t know laptops have this capability and I don’t think my keyboard LED is advanced enough to do this if I understand what it does.
Thanks for any help! Also if any of this should be redirected anywhere else please let me know.
Have you tried rigtht-click on the icon and remove check from “Keep in Dock”?
When that function is enabled, the LEDs for showing the On/Off state, of the “Num Lock” or “Caps Lock” keys, will light up or turn off the LED. Those LEDs are traditionally in the upper right-hand corner of the keyboard, above the numeric keypad, but manufacturers have been known to place them elsewhere for reasons of internal clearance/layout for notebook computers.
I didn’t have mate-hud enabled, until just now.
You should be able to enable the HUD in Mate Tweaks, by placing a check in the box next to that option, as seen below:
If you are not sure it is enabled, you can also use the command line:
sudo gsettings set org.mate.hud
Once that is done, from within any GUI-based application to which you have given “focus”, and your cursor is NOT in a text input box, you can press the “/” key, which will trigger the pop-up of a search box, into which you can enter the string you are searching for, or, you can hit the “Esc” key to exit the HUD.
Unfortunately, unlike all other icons on the dock, any docklets I added through the properties menu do not have that option. Right clicking them does nothing.
As for the other two questions, you perfectly answered my questions thank you! Those features make much more sense now.
When you select “Enable keyboard LED” in the “Panel” tab of MATE Tweak, it places an indicator in the notification area of the panel. The indicator shows whether Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock are active. For example, my Logitec K470 wireless keyboard has no LED indicator lights, so I find it useful to enable this option in MATE Tweak.
