VMware Workstation Pro fails after Linux Update

An irritating (to me) side affect of running VMware Workstation Pro (v16.2.3) is that every time there is a Linux kernel update, or updates of core files that require a reboot, VMware requires a recompilation of two modules, vmmon and vmnet. This usually only takes a moment (and root authority). But after the latest update, the recompilation failes. And the logs produced are little help.

This is not a new circumstance. Internet searches show this problem crops up from time to time, but they all seem to have different solutions.

Right now, I have unusable software, which is a real problem, as I use VMs to demo solutions during training I give.

I'm running UbuntuMATE 20.04 LTS.

Any ideas?

I received no replies to this query, but I researched and found the solution that worked for me.

I decided to remove and reinstall VMware Workstation Pro, but found the uninstaller errored with the same conditions as the update. So, I searched VMware's site again, and after a lot of convoluted breadcrumb chasing, found this article on VMware KB detailing how to manually uninstall the components of the program. Following the instructions, I then installed the latest release (v16.2.3) successfully.
