Webcam not turning on

All we added was a PPA and ucview. Not booing could be an issue with graphics but the laptop was working fine before, right? I guess you can boot with a live usb, install boot-repair on the live session (see 2nd option in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair), you need 3 lines, run boot-repair and I hope booting will be fixed.

Yes. That's all I ran.

Thanks. I'll try it out.

I ran boot-repair with no success. I tried many times and stayed stuck at the ubuntu mate logo. Finally, I decided to just reload mate. After it was reloaded, I tried rerunning the commands from http://www.ucview.com/products/linux-client-installation and again had a stuck screen at login. I gave up for a week and a half and now I'm back at it. Ideas?

What do you mean, "just reload mate" ? Did you re-install mate on your laptop?

The problem is mate is not booting up, totally different from webcam not working.

I reinstalled Mate. Mate works fine now. I just wondered about ideas for getting the webcam recognized.

ok, does lsusb list the webcam?

No. It is an internal webcam. Is that where it would be listed?

webcameras are in the usb subsystem so lsusb should list it (as my laptop does).
I dont know what to suggest next ... looked online for your laptop model hp probook 6550b, it should be a Chicony web camera https://linux-hardware.org/index.php?id=usb:04f2-b1ac

Does dmesg | grep -i Camera show anything? looking for some usb info ...

No. Nothing comes up.

my suggestions:

  1. try another Linux distro UM20.04beta was released today
(try, do not install) and see if it recognizes the camera
(lsusb should list the camera, cheese should work)
  2. ask if a friend has a usb camera you can borrow & use on our laptop
