Ok, I'm a TOTAL N00B here, so please be easy on me.
Last Sunday, I installed Mate 22.04.2 from a USB-mounted iso.
After a while, both the 'Welcome' screen and 'Software Boutique' stopped working, only showing blank windows.
This annoyed me, especially since I'm not knowledgeable enough in Linux to remove them from my system, or even stop the blank 'Welcome' screen to come up every time. Besides, both apps were kind of useful to me, being a newb and all.
So I decided to reinstall the whole system and try to avoid screwing it up, so
Last night, I installed 22.04.2 from the USB stick again.
After each software installation, I was careful to reboot the system, to check that the newbie-friendly apps were still working.
Today, after installing the latest system updates (by using the 'Software Updater' app), now 'Welcome' and 'Software Boutique' have stopped working again, both just being blank.
(I realized just now that they are both, in fact, the same app, just starting in different modes...)
So I went here and started looking for fixes. I have read the threads that concern this problem for 22.04 in general, but none of the "fixes" that are suggested seem to work for me.
Most importantly, I do not have a directory called .local/share/mime. So I can't just delete the file for the mime cache that people are referring to.
When I attempt to start 'Welcome' from the CLI, I get the following output:
/snap/ubuntu-mate-welcome/726/usr/bin/ubuntu-mate-welcome:1837: DeprecationWarning: Gtk.Window.set_wmclass is deprecated
w.set_wmclass('ubuntu-mate-welcome', 'ubuntu-mate-welcome')
/snap/ubuntu-mate-welcome/726/usr/bin/ubuntu-mate-welcome:1842: DeprecationWarning: Gdk.Screen.get_height is deprecated
if s.get_height() <= 600:
[Welcome] Snap detected. Using VERSION

[Welcome] Application Ready.
/snap/ubuntu-mate-welcome/726/usr/bin/ubuntu-mate-welcome:1024: DeprecationWarning: WebKit2.WebView.run_javascript is deprecated
self.run_javascript(function)
KMS: DRM_IOCTL_MODE_CREATE_DUMB failed: Permission denied
Failed to create GBM buffer of size 800x552: Permission denied
After this, the blank window appears.
When I close the blank window, the CLI says '[Welcome] Application Closed'.
The same thing happens when i attempt to start 'Software Boutique' from the CLI (which makes sense).
I have tried to locate the failing javascript, but I'm not very well versed in these things, and I don't understand where to look for it, or what to do with it, should I find it.
If you have read this far - THANK YOU!
Sorry for being an annoyance, but I would really like to fix this, somehow.
Or at least, to figure out how to remove the 'Welcome' app, so I don't have to look at it with each startup.
Peace be with you.

22.04 is nearing end of life and 24.04 is out. Now 22.04 can be extended to 7 years with Ubuntu Pro, or 24.04 to ten years with Ubuntu Pro. Regular release cycle is every 3 years for LTS releases with only security updates for 5 years.
May I ask why you chose 22.04? There are valid reasons, but I am not sure as a noob you understand the choices.
Let us know.
Well... you are right that I don't have a very good reason for choosing 22.04.
I once helped a person with their physical SSD installation, and a subsequent UM installation. (They are a long time user, but couldn't see). This was some time last year. They ran the "jellyfish" version. I took an instant liking to the system, and this prompted me to download the ISO at the time. Being recently fed up with M$, I took out the USB stick and set up a dual-boot on my machine.
I have a feeling you are encouraging me to try 24.04.
...
I might just do that.
Thank you for the feedback. <3
If you see the small box 'open welcome screen when I log in' uncheck that box
If it is not there go to:
System>Preferences>Personal>Startup Applications> scroll down to the bottom
Now uncheck the box to the left of welcome.
Now welcome screen will no longer come up.
If you don't have a Software Boutique or Software Center check if you have Synaptic under:
System>Administration>Synaptic
That is a software manager too.
If not there add it.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install synaptic
Now you can go in and install and remove software. Synaptic takes a bit of getting used to, but you will love it when you learn to use it.
Good luck.
I should add if you get this working the way you want you can then upgrade to 24.04. I would wait to do that until the first point release comes out in August this year.
I can't tell you the procedure and commands to do that as I always do clean installs, as the backup is the same and I think you have to remove some third pary apps, PPA' and maybe some Wine or PlayOnLinux application.
Someone here will help you with the procedure and commands if you decide to upgrade to 24.04.
If all this works please check the "solution" box at the bottom
I've been using Linux/Ubuntu for over 16 years and I am still a Noob.
Thank you! At last that thing is gone now.
I will miss it, but I will get over it.
I had already found and installed Synaptic in my quest to find a package handler with a GUI, and I really like it.
Thank you for taking the time and helping me out. <3
