What has replaced PulseAudio?

I start now testing my Linux life after UM22.04 has run out of support and installed UM24.04 in Virtualbox. I'm trying to get my head around all the changes that were made since 22.04.
I noticed that PulseAudio has gone, but what do I need to do to get sound in Audacity when I record.

Please, if someone could tell me the replacement for PulseAudio that would be marvellous.

Thanks in advance.

Ubuntu-MATE 22.04 LTS has support for three years from initial release, that is until late April 2025, meaning you've much of a year of full support remaining.

In Ubuntu, PipeWire had replaced PulseAudio internally prior to 24.04, but from a users perspective I personally don't see a difference. My installs are usually multi-desktop, and I'm still using pavucontrol (or the Qt version when using a Qt desktop) to control volumes, even if underneath the sound has been handled by Pipewire for some time now.

The Ubuntu MATE 22.10 release notes highlighted the change; ie. refer Ubuntu MATE 22.10 Release Notes | Ubuntu MATE, with it mentioned again in 23.04 notes too (Ubuntu MATE 23.04 Release Notes | Ubuntu MATE) with no changes having been made in 23.10 or 24.04 in this regard.

Thanks for your quick reply. I will give it a try.
It usually takes several months time until I make my mind up, and I say to my customers, "windows 10 will run out of support next year, start preparing now"
