Hi everyone, I have a Lenovo V15 G2 ALC PC, Windows 10 64 bit and Ubuntu Mate were installed on the PC, after the Windows update KB5048652 on 10/12/2024 Ubuntu Mate inexplicably disappeared and if I try to install again by booting there is no longer the option for disk encryption? Can anyone help me?
Hi Robb, welcome to the community
I am pretty sure that the MS-Windows update trashed your Linux boot, MS-Windows is notorious for actions like that.
The rescue is a bit more complicated that usual because disk encryption.
I have no experience with that in combination with MS-Windows
You might have a look at this post:
But if your situation is like the link below, you might have a problem that might be near impossible to solve:
You could download and burn gparted (free) or Parted Magic (paid) to a USB drive and boot from that to see if the Ubuntu Mate partition was overwritten or if it is still there and just a boot loader issue. I keep a Parted Magic USB for those kinds of problems. I don't know if Windows has a similar tool as the last I dual booted or used Windows was Win7.
Because of UEFI booting, MS tricks and even os-prober being disabled by default I no longer dual boot. My solution has been to get free or low cost laptops from family and friends that were going to recycle them. There should be plenty of those around with the push to Win11 and it's hardware requirements
Hi, @1223rrty and welcome to the Ubuntu MATE Community!
thanks for the answers, as I thought, after the update of windows and firmware lenovo no is no longer present in the BIOS the UEFI / Legacy option, I think I will look for another pc only for MATE. Thanks again.
Not sure I understand you, but If what you are saying is that you managed to the find instructions on the web, and install Mate dual boot encrypted - but now can't see the option to boot into Mate - then it's probably just that windows rearranged boot managers in your BIOS to boot directly into Windows. If so, you should be able to get Mate's Grub2 boot screen back with the following simple steps.
-
Boot into your PC's BIOS
Usually just hitting F2 during boot-up is enough, but if you have issues getting
into your PC's BIOS, you may need to go into Windows and disable fast boot first. -
Once you are in the BIOS, find the "Boot" tab and you should see all the available
boot managers listed (Normally just Windows and Ubuntu) -
Windows will likely have moved up above Ubuntu Linux. If so, you just need to
move Ubuntu back up to be the number one first boot option, save and exit.
This should restore your Grub2 login menu (the one that pops up before it asks
you to enter the password to unlock your encrypted Linux partition)
Windows has a nasty habit of grabbing back the boot manager after updates,
so most likely this should be all you will need to get back Mate.
... but if not, we'll need more info -
like:
What version of Mate are we talking about? - and - Why are you trying to "install again" ?
(as opposed to just recovering your previous installation?)
