Itâs not that complicated for basic usage: juste choose ânew vmâ, give it a name, choose âUbuntu 64 bitsâ, click next until it asks you to create a virtual hard drive (chose the default vdi option), continue with the default options until it finishes configuration. Start the VM, itâll ask for a bootable device, just click on the icon next to the dropdown menu to select an ISO and it will boot on it. Installation will be the same as usual. Itâll ask you to format the drive: donât worry, itâs the simulated drive (the vdi image), it wonât format your real drive.
You can check the VM settings (when itâs not running) if you need specific ones, theyâre pretty straightforward.
If you want to install Ubuntu MATE 17.10, be sure to download a daily ISO and not the alpha 2, it has network issues (see there: [Artful] No network after installation).
