I’m probably missing something but how does one start/cause this “HUD” in 17.10? Main and/or application menus?
I have a 17.10 VM updated all the way from Alpha x that I think is equal to Beta now (just did 100+ updates) or… is that possibly my problem?

HUD available via the Contemporary, Cupertino and Mutiny panels. I changed mine to Contemporary, started a terminal and pressed the left Alt … HUD appears. Pressing Alt again, HUD goes away.

I have to keep tabs on this if ALT is the trigger or my no-mouse navigation will get affected. I saw Ctrl+Alt+Space and Super+(num) mentioned here and there.
