Which release should I use on a Macbook Pro - mid 2009

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro 15 inch. Should I use the 64 bit or 32 bit version? It has 4 GB ram that I am possibly upgrading to 8 gb.

I have also read that I should use the newest release instead of the the LTS for trackpad issues. Is this true and what else will it help with?

I’d use the 64-bit since it gets tested much more.

Starting with 17.10 the newer libinput touchpad driver is used instead of the older synaptics. In my experience, newer touchpads do seem to work better with libinput, but older ones vary. (You can install syntaptics on 17.10 if you want to use it instead.)

I have a late 2008 MacBook Aluminum with 4 GB memory. It runs the 64 bit version of 17.10 very well. Better all around than 16.04 LTS.

That being said, a MacBook is the only time I would recommend 17.10 over 16.04 as I prefer the most stable version for every day use.

Thanks guys. I am new to doing anything but zenning informal tech support and finding interesting new ways to break people’s programs in unexpected ways, much less linux.

Is there a place I can read about the difference between a long term support release and another release?

This explains it nicely…
