Whisky-Menu, Tray symbols and desktop icons

Hi,

i'm new to Ubuntu mate and i miss some settings from my other desktop environments (xfce and kde).

whisky menu: this is a panel applet in xfce to launch applications. I can resize the window (whats not possible with all the applets in mate). The behaviour pf all mate menu applets is that when the mouse is over a categorie the right window with the applications is opened immediately. The whisker menu is different: the right window is opened only when i click to the categorie. Is there a applet for mate with this behaviour? can i resize the window?

There is a notification applet in xfce and kde that show my symbols of autostart applications in the bottom right corner. I can start actions with a right click on the symbol. i.e. i start sirikali (a gui for encfs). when i right click on the sirikali symbol i can mount a volume. There a some notification applets also in mate but i can start and action with the right click.

Desktop: I use symbols on the desktop for the most important applications. In kde and xfce the symbols can only created on certain positions. There is no text overlay. Its something like tiling. But i can't find any settings for the desktop.

automatic wallpaper changing: can i change the wallpaper lets say every 30 minutes automatically?

Hi,

  • Whisker menu: I don't know of any way to replicate the click behaviour with MATE.
  • The notification thingie. Have not quite understood what you meant. If you're talking about launching whatever command you want by clicking an icon on your panel, you can add custom launchers and hide them in a drawer to do that.
  • You can create wallpaper slideshows using Shotwell. Just select whatever pictures you want to switch between and save your selection as a desktop slideshow. You will be prompted to choose the delay between each picture and whether you'd like it on the lockscreen as well.

That's the thing about having tons of different environments. You will always miss some features whenever you switch to another one.

The wallpaper slideshow does not work. Mate starts with the same wallpaper every time and nothing is changed.

Can i install new applets from the net?

I just tried the wallpaper slideshow.
To make it work, add the *.xml file generated by Shotwell and located in ~/.local/share/shotwell/wallpaper/ as a wallpaper in MATE appearance properties.
Then it will work.

Have you found any MATE applets online not already available in the system that you would like to install manually ?
