Why this new desktop, mixing Unity and Mate.

It’s not a new desktop. It’s just another choice of panel layout. I think it’s a great idea, to be honest.
If someone wants a pure Mate desktop environment (like me), then that is what they can have, no problem. On the other hand, if someone wants a Unity-like experience (though I can’t, for the life of me, understand why!), then then they can have that too.
That’s called choice
What’s not to like?..
Outstanding work from Martin Wimpress and the team once again!
The great thing is, these are also new applets for the panels. If you like the global menu or the application dock, you can add them to any other panel too.
Like @stevecook172001 says, it’s just another choice… like there’s Redmond, a Windows-like layout and Cupertino for a more OS X look. It’s also customisable - like any of the panels.
If someone likes the look of Ubuntu Unity, but have weaker hardware, this may be a fine alternate for them.
@Wimpy was on the Linux Action Show, episode 133 talking about Mutiny at 8:08.
I did not have it very clear that it Mutiny, but I think if it’s a good option to have both worlds (Mate and Unity). But for my part I am satisfied with Mate only, but the idea is good.
No lo tenía muy claro que es Mutiny, pero creo que si es una buena opción para tener los dos mundos (Mate y Unity). Pero por mi parte estoy satisfecho con Mate solamente, pero esta bien la idea.
A choice is what Linux gives that makes it different from Windows or OSX. And in the spirit of Linux I completely welcome the new choice of Mutiny Desktop.
Yep, and if my wife & I did not have our Cupertino (which does not come with the non-UMATE - MATE Tweaks I have seen - 'Debian' & 'Manjaro') we would feel lost.
I have found, absolutely, no comparison to what we have here, with UMATE; and other MATES (as the big reviews moreover state) do not measure up to us either - not by a long shot!
I completely agree about the comparison to other implementations of Mate in other distros. I have sampled pretty much all of them and they all fall well short of the Ubuntu Mate version. It’s not that their Mate desktops are not good. They are. It’s that the underlying distro architecture is not as stable as Ubuntu. Which is why Martin and the UM team were so wise to choose to use Ubuntu as a flagship distro for this desktop. Especially given that it follows in the spirit of the original Gnome 2, which is what made Ubuntu so popular in the first place.
I kind of… like this idea.
The holistic recipe, of what this OS ends up being, is wholly unique; in the fact that it is, as you point out, made of history and stability.
In addition to GNOME2 enthusiasts, and various talent, it is now evident, that so many of the folks who use UMATE are either newbies, who read about us, or lost Unity subjugates who are thrilled to have their good ol’ Ubuntu back - neither care much about the background; they are just glad it JUST WORKS.
I think Ubuntu MATE is the antithesis of what used to render Linux, beyond the universal average user. And I think it is exactly, that, which makes it the zenith for what most of the planet is seeking in an OS.
Yep, Ubuntu MATE proves to be the everyone’s OS; I do not know of any other which is so versatile, in every respect.
I might try it once, but will probably go back to my regular settings.
I wonder if I tried to stage an uprising against this, would that be an UN-Mutiny?
What kind words. I’m blushing
Mutiny and the normal Mate upper panel just work fine together.
Currently I use the new Unity like panel plug-in for getting an overview what apps are currently running and to switch between them.
Its really useful and just works.
I’m going to be getting a new used HP laptop off Ebay very soon. I plan to install UM 16.04 and give Mutiny a try. @Wimpy the last time I tried out the layout changing app, I had re-setup my desktop. Can you save your desktop setup (wallpaper, icons, etc) so you don’t have to do that?
