Why does Firefox crash so much in 24.04?

I never had an issue with Firefox on any Ubuntu MATE builds except with 24.04. The issues seem to be random and different in nature. For example, today, the Firefox display just disappeared. I can see the app was still open, it was even shown on the bottom panel. Other times it freezes or closes unexpectedly. This is not a daily problem, more like a couple of times/week issue. With 24.04 this is my first use of a snap installed Firefox. Could that be the issue?

I confess, I haven't upgraded from 22.04.5 LTS yet, although I'm due. I've had problems with Firefox too, although crashes are rare. It's mostly just sluggishness and unresponsiveness.

How did you install Firefox? I had so many issues with the included version that I removed it and downloaded it right from Mozilla. It's better, but is still a performance beast. To that end, I've installed Brave Browser which is much better. Plus it has some very nice features, like built-in ad-blocking that I like.

You might consider uninstalling and re-installing.

I have trouble with Firefox too. It works okay in my work computer but in my home computer the display disappears sometimes like jaybo described. I am trying chromium instead and it seem to last longer before it runs into trouble. With Chromium if I have too many tabs open the mouse cursor disappears and I have to reboot using the keyboard. I thought it was only me because I have an old gaming PC at home with an Nvidia card. I tried plain ubuntu and I had the same problems with that too after a while. I’m using X.org X Server and not the Nvidia proprietary driver or proprietary tested driver. I had worse problems when I tried those out, but that was a while ago. Maybe I should try some more experiments when I have time and try to narrow down the problem(s). Both my home and work PCs have three monitors and I am running Ubuntu MATE 24.04.3 LTS in both. I’m not sure what graphics card is in my work computer, it could be another Nvidia card but a more modest one or maybe a more common one.

I'm running snap packaged Firefox on Ubuntu MATE 24.04 and not seeing any of those problems.

Firefox doesnt use my dGPU (an RTX 2060) at all, I cant remember if I ever got that working - its using my integrated GPU (AMD Radeon RX Vega 8). Perhaps its an NVIDIA issue?

To OldStrummer and others who seek wisdom,

I recommend not upgrading.

Unless you have some hardware issues, the best plan is to stay with what works.

Same here, desktop sometimes completely freezes when firing up the firefox. Cold restart of my t420 notebook needed to get the machine working again.

Those crashes doesn’t happen if another program (calculator, vlc for example) is running before launching firefox. Quite strange but this seems to solve the problem for me

I get a lot of “false starts” with Firefox and have for years.

It just doesnt appear on screen, but it does in the panel.

Basically I have to keep opening+closing it, changing workspace, and try again until it appears.

Are you sure? Did the last update fix it? Firefox crashed a couple of weeks ago for me. But, both UM and Firefox updated last night for me. Time will tell if “Problem is fixed“
