17.10 Updater "Bricked" My Lenovo T420 Laptop

I’m a noobie - Be Gentle
Lenovo T420 Laptop i7,8Gb 3.2gHz
Dual Boot UM16.04 WIN 10
Udpated WIN10 - OK
Updated UM16.04 -OK
Upgraded to UM17.10 - NOT GOOD!
After update BOIS would not recognize the HD
Booted to BOIS- everything looked OK so I exited without changing anything and tried again to boot in UM.
It started to load the update ,I think… and then froze
I tried again. it recognized the HD now and
Screen displayed
/dev/sda5:clean, 526124/374377 files,9799067/14951936 blocks
then blank screen with mouse cursor
Repeats this continuously
Pushing “OFF” then displays the UM logo and 5 green dots load three times and the laptop turns off
Tried using the GRUB advanced options using various kernels and recover- same results
It’s not my daily driver so I don’t need to save the home directory.
Just want to repartition the drive using WIN10 and reinstall UM16.04 from a stick.
How do I do that?

Hi Spanky,

if you created separate swap, root and home partitions, follow this guide and DON’T format your home partition and all your settings/data should still be there!:

Install Ubuntu (Mate) using "Something else" method
