18.04 Caja doesn't see local network

I recently installed Ubuntu MATE 18.04. Caja does not see any of the machines on my local network. I copied some files using rsync, so I know the connection to other machines works, but I don’t see anything in “Browse Network” with Caja. Also, my Ubuntu MATE 16.04 machine does not see the 18.04 machine.

What did I miss setting up?

probably a wrong answer but in the devices section of caja can you see it there?

When I click on “Browse Network” in the Network section under Devices, I see an link icon labeled “Windows Network”. When I double click on it, I get an empty window. The location says “smb:///”

Have you yet shared any folders on your machine to the network and/or do you have any other machine on your network with shared folders currently?

I have the same issue. My way of sorting this out

  1. Open caja
  2. Click File - Connect to Server…
  3. In the Connect to Server dialog box select Windows share as Type
  4. Enter the Server name
  5. Enter Share (name)
  6. Remove the / from the Folder field
  7. Enter the Domain Name (usually or if not really configured WORKGROUP)
  8. Enter User Name and
  9. Enter Password valid for the share
  10. Check Remember this password
  11. Check Add bookmark
  12. Enter a Bookmark name
  13. Click Connect

The share will automatically be opened.
When you open caja and want to access your share(s), click Bookmark from the menu bar and select any of the share bookmarks to make them available.

I went a step further and installed gigolo. By using Gigolo, all the shares / network bookmarks are mounted automatically when I start my PC.

I’m not entirely sure. I did change folder access of Public for others to create and delete files. Before doing so the folder icon in Caja was plain. After doing so, the folder icon has a silhouette of a person on the bottom right corner of it.

In older versions of Ubuntu I remember seeing an entry in a menu somewhere with the word sharing. I don’t find anything like that now.

I do have a machine running Ubuntu MATE 16.04 with the folder Public visible on a laptop running stock Ubuntu 16.04. I can transfer files between those two machines.

Steps 1-13 work. Thanks.

I’ll try gigolo later when I have a little spare time.

Thanks. I’ll study that thread some more later.

I had trouble with this one too. I finished up installing Nautilus which I already knew how to use. However using Caja and going to the "Go" menu on the main menu bar, lo and behold there was "Networks". Clicking on this revealed my local area network.
If only someone had told me instead of leading me down the garden path. Easy hay!

I hope this saves someone from tearing out their hair like I did.

Cheers!
