[19.10] Printer-Hell (Local USB vs LAN vs Adding and removing up to 3 units)

Me again with those weird/unique issues!

So just yesterday I started having issues printing using latest 19.10.

To put things into context: I have 2 printers: 1x directly hooked up via USB and the 2nd via LAN IP.

Everything always worked fine (since 2015).

But now, when I open a .ODS file and print it, one chance out of two it will give me a printer error. And by "printer error" I mean that there are just no printers available.

So, of course, I had to blame latest LibreOffice update.

I hence started working with PDF format and: same error when trying to print.

Now this is weird because if I close the program (Whichever, LO or Atril), wait 30-60 seconds, reopen the same file and retry printing: well, it works.

The only thing that I can see under dmesg that "makes sense" is:

[357521.011009] usb 1-1.4.2: new full-speed USB device number 40 using xhci_hcd
[357521.289073] usb 1-1.4.2: New USB device found, idVendor=03f0, idProduct=0d17, bcdDevice= 1.00

I have looked under MATE Menu -> Printers for when I get the printers error and none are listed (and printer is rejecting jobs).

Yet when it works, they are both, of course, listed. Again, for them to work, I just need to pause 30-60 seconds, possibly 120 and they'll appear again.

Is my print daemon fscked?

PS: I hadn't used my printers until a bit before Christmas 2017 and never faced that issue back then as it always worked fine.

Just a small update: it seems that I am also having this issue when using Firefox and printing.

First print goes all of the way to the printer selection window, then sends the job and finally prints it but if I immediately try doing the same thing with another page to print, firefox will just never load the printer selection screen and ends up not responding so I have to force quit.

Retrying sometimes works and sometimes now. But reretrying always ends up working.

So it's not really a LO issue, just wanted to point that out.

Roaming around into system logs did not provided anything relevant nor meaningful (to my knowledge) to share here.

But I will be back. I'm always back.

Hey look at that: I finally found /var/log/cups as I am still having struggle when trying to print out once every two tries to my network printer and I believe this could be related to ipv6? At least according to the error_log:

But when I added it I only specified it's IPv4 address....

Ideas?

Merry Monday!

I have some more to add to this printer saga: first off, I had 2 printers configured locally, one via direct USB(HP Laserjet 1012) and the other one via LAN(Samsung C-640).

Now, both of my printers need servicing so they were both shutdown and deleted from UM menu -> printers so am back with an empty printer panel.

I have just plugged in a replacement printer(Xerox Phaser 6010) and even though it supports both USB and LAN interfaces I have decided to go for USB because I needed it fairly quickly.

So I did like my grandma would had done and clicked on "add" and then selected the Xerox Phaser printer that naturally showed up. I kept pressing next using only the recommended choices that were proposed to me and finally clicked on finish. All of that went well.

But when trying to print a test page, the fun began and it didn't worked and I am now facing 2 problems: 1. the print queue does not show up in the notification menu and 2. I was still getting errors related to samsung under /var/log/cups/error.log per the following entries:

What is somewhat troubling to me is that those time stamps match exactly the times I tried printing my document on my new(Xerox) printer. But this might be a mere coincidence.

What is very troubling to me is the fact that I had deleted the samsung printer from the GUI yet it still shows samsung entries under the cups log.

But ok, I understand that to get my Samsung printer going I had to install the following packages:

ii printer-driver-splix 2.0.0+svn315-7fakesync1 amd64 Driver for Samsung and Xerox SPL2 and SPLc laser printers
ii suld-configurator-2-qt4 4.01.21-2 amd64 Samsung Unified Driver Configurator (Qt4 interface)
ii suld-driver-4.01.17 4.01.17-6 amd64 Samsung Unified Linux Driver
ii suld-driver-common-1 1-11 all Samsung Unified Linux Driver (common files)
ii suld-network-2 4.01.17-2 amd64 Samsung Unified Driver Configurator (network connectivity)
ii suld-ppd-2 4.01.17-4 all Samsung Unified Linux Driver (ppd files)
ii suldr-keyring 2 all Samsung Unified Linux Driver Repository Keyring

So maybe, just maybe, this is what is conflicting. So I will move forward and purge those packages but for my grandma, just the thought of correctly following the on-screen instructions and it ended up NOT working would surely made her install Windoze or, worst, get a mac. But let's no go there

2 beers later, every Samsung packages has been purged and I have also taken the extra step to wipe the Samsung folder so nothing remains:

$ sudo apt purge suld-driver-common-1 suld-ppd-2 suldr-keyring suld-driver-4.01.17 -y

Heading back into my Xerox printer's properties and now trying to print a test page again results in the following under /var/log/cups/error_log

E [24/Feb/2020:16:55:33 -0500] Xerox-Phaser-6010N: File "/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertoqpdl" not available: No such file or directory

Of course /lib/cups/filter/rastertoqpdl isn't there when I ls that folder and trying to install it doesn't do anything good:

$ sudo apt search rastertoqpdl
Sorting... Done
Full Text Search... Done
$

I have restarted the cups service for good measure but that did not changed anything and my Xerox is still showing under lpc status

I guess my last escape is to reboot but before doing so I wanted to update this thread yet again with my... Printer Hell.

And am back after rebooting. Here's what's happened to me:

The first thing I got was a Printer configuration error There is a missing printer filter for printer 'Xerox-Phaser-6010N' notification when I logged back on.

And look at that: the print queue status icon finally appeared in my top bar with a red exclamation mark on. Opening it up, I finally saw my test page of 15 minutes ago that was still stalled in there. So I removed it. And I also taken the liberty to delete the Xerox printer again so I could rereadd it and reretest.

Of course, /lib/cups/filter/rastertoqpdl didn't appeared by magic so it is still missing but those error messages related to it under cups log are gone.

But what a surprise to see that my Samsung printer is still there and clicking on "remove" still does not do anything. (Now I am starting to think that I should be login on using root on TTY7 and delete it but since I had initially added it via my user account it would only make sense that I could purge it with my user account, no?(plus we shouldn't be using root anymore?). Also, I had manage to delete my Samsung printer before my initial reboot and it was officially cleared out of the "printers" entries so how and why did it reappeared there?

Anyways, I then decided to remove the Xerox printer and it was removed instantaneously as per expected.

Now clicking on "Add" a printer again and doing per previously mentioned (Stick with recommended and go for finish) it again all worked well.

On to print a test page on my Xerox and even though /var/log/cups/access_log tells me it's all good:

localhost - - [24/Feb/2020:17:18:33 -0500] "POST /printers/Xerox-Phaser-6010N HTTP/1.1" 200 416 Print-Job successful-ok

The reality is it never printed out. And /var/log/cups/error_log seems to agree with it:

Allow me to RE-reboot then (Not that this should change anything as it's Linux).

Am back again in my TTY7 session and SURPRISE! no more printer configuration notification error popping up immediately on login nor any printer spoiler alert. Is this time the right time? Time to print a test sheet and find out!

localhost - - [24/Feb/2020:17:21:35 -0500] "POST /printers/Xerox-Phaser-6010N HTTP/1.1" 200 109789 Print-Job successful-ok

SUCCESS! But no. I am kidding. The LOG states it's a success. But in reality it never printed out and my printer is still sitting at ready

Am I alone in this printer-hell world?

One final word before I went ahead and post this is that my Xerox printer is spanking new and it always at ready regardless of if there is a printer spoiler in Linux or not. So it's not the printer.

At this time my next step will be to delete that USB Xerox printer and hook it up/configure it via LAN. Let's see if I have free time again tomorrow...

By now you possibly think that I am a masochist and you could very well be right.

What I did was: unplug the USB cable from my Xerox, unplug the RJ45 from the Samsung and relay it into the LAN jack of my Xerox.

Then I went ahead and again deleted the Xerox which was added locally via USB. Of course, my Samsung printer was still listed as installed and I couldn't delete it.

So I went ahead and added a printer via "Add" but this time selected the Network Printer option. And guess what? Well, both of the Samsung (Which is totally unplugged) and this Xerox via LAN are both showing up. Interesting.

Went ahead and selecting the Xerox one, followed the wizard, it's all good and finish. Try printing a test page: printer spoiler appears then dissapears, I hear the printer doing a mild tick and... nothing.

So I once again rebooted. Now under Printers my samsung is GONE and only my Xerox is shown but instead of Xerox-Phaser-6010N as it was written via USB it's now labelled Xerox-Xerox-Phaser-6010N and printing to it fails while the printer stays in ready.

Perhaps even more frustrating is the fact that going back into Printers -> Add -> Network Printer (So I could document this reply properly) shows me 0 printer now. So why not, again again again, delete the Xerox from Printers and try again? Doing so does not change the outcome of anything even though I can ping my Xerox printer via it's LAN interface.

One final look(because I am about ready to quit on this) at /var/log/cups/error_log shows me, again, Samsung phantom entries:

So funny fact: if Samsung printer is displayed under Printers then the cups log might not show anything about it. But if it's NOT displayed under Printers then this error log shows entries related to Samsung. I think this could be related to using a printer via LAN but I am not intelligent enough to come up with this conclusion by myself.

But be sure to count on me to discover more new and (un)exciting Linux twilight zones in the near future because... that's who I am

Final update for today: I have tried using 2x different RJ45 cables and with the LAN web admin console opened in a local browser and after having sent 4 different jobs to the printer, the web admin console of the Xerox printer always displayed properly when refreshing it, yet nothing printed out and the printer spoiler queue always emptied as if nothing wrong happened.

Printer always sat at Ready during this whole process.
