I am thinking of installing Nautilus and removing caja. Is there any technical reason why that would not work?
It is not a good idea to remove Caja, because Caja is also responsible for the display of the desktop.
Additional file manager is ok, but why Nautilus? (Caja is a fork of Nautilus).
Because caja won't display previews of images etc in List View, while Nautilus will (or at least, did).
There shouldn’t be any conflict if you want to have both Caja and Nautilus installed.
I just installed nautilus in a virtual machine of U-M 16.04. It has little resemblance to the Gnome2 version and does things so differently I can’t believe it retains the name.
It DOES display preview icons in /usr/share/icons but I attached to a samba share - no dice. Caja can set “local files only” and filesize so I looked for such settings… and looked… gee, is there any settings in this? I found so much stuff I could never live with I had to leave it be. It’s really bad for a keyboard navigator like me.
I’m curious, if you install nautilus, how you like it? It’s possible more packages are needed to enhance its capabilities.
OK, I will try out Nautilus in addition to caja and see how it works out.
Before I do that, however, I will see if I can solve another problem I have with caja - I don't want to confuse the issue too much.

New bookmarks in caja are not propagated to “Save/Save As” dialogue boxes[/quote]
Ok, that problem turned out to be a feature, not a bug, and a workaround has been found.
So now I am ready to install Nautilus.
(Although I gather from
that my problem with caja not showing previews in List View has been fixed: however I don’t know when that will be available for me to install in Ubuntu Mate 16.04 - it will be caja version > 1.18, I think)
OK, now I have installed Nautilus.
$ nautilus --version
GNOME nautilus 3.14.3
I can run it nicely from the terminal and produces what I want for List View:
I can't find an "Edit Preferences" menu, can't get it to show all those columns as default, and I notice that although it does what I need with graphics files, it does not do what the old Nautilus did - show extracts from the first few lines of text files in the text file icon.
All I need to to do now, is find a way of making the "Places" top panel menu call Nautilus instead of caja.
