I used Ubuntu Mate as my main OS ever since it was a thing. But a year ago, I decided to try PopOS. What compelled me was a claim it made about being a good data science OS and better management of drivers. I did not find that to be the case at all. I used PopOS exclusively for 6 months to give it a good shot. It's a decent OS, but I did run into some quirky system glitches. It got to the point where I just missed the simplicity of Ubuntu Mate. So I switched back. I just can't stay away from you guys...
I bought a System 76 laptop. I was totally frustrated with the desktop because it was built on gnome 3. I only made it two or three months before wiping the hard drive and installing Mate. I know they just came out with a new Cosmic desktop which written in Rust, but it is still based on Gnome 3 so no thank you.
Welcome back.
Yes, that's it! You nailed it. It wasn't so much the PopOS pieces I was frustrated with, rather it was more the gnome 3 pieces. It's good to be back.
My story is a bit different in detail and the same in its essence. I found Ubuntu 8.04 to be the first really usable desktop and had leaved M$ world. Ubuntu 10.04 desktop was virtually perfect. Since then Unity came and I spent several years trying to find another desktop implementation I could get along with. Finally, it was Ubuntu Mate I felt myself to be at home again.
Many thanks to Martin Wimpress and UM community for that!
That brings back such good memories. I loved all the Ubuntu LTS's in the early days. I started using UM since 14.04. If I recall correctly, I heard about through an episode of a show from Jupiter Broadcasting. I think Wimpy must have been co-host or something. Good times!
Are you having issues with the applets and the icons on top and such? For example, are you getting blue boundaries or whatever around icons on the panels?
I think you might have posted to the wrong thread? Though ironically it's the one thing right now with computer is random missing Plank dock icons: Some Plank icons disappear after updating
