Customizing Caja display - ability to permanently set both column placement and width

I may be only reviving a very old gripe, but ever since I abandoned MS Windows 2 decades ago, I have regretted losing the ability to specify

  • the column order, and
  • the width of individual columns,
in such a way that it would be permanent and would persist across reboots.

I saw the reference to this earlier posting of I believe the identical issue:

Does anyone know if there are any current attempts, or interest, to address this persistent and annoying issue?

I don't think this is possible without using gsettings in a script

The python bindings might be a good place to start if you want to look into writing an extension yourself: GitHub - mate-desktop/python-caja: libcaja-extension python bindings

Thank you, Stephen. I don't mind the soft-prodding to contribute.

However, I am still "fighting" my way through the building of my node.js-based, peer-to-peer, javascript-driven custom-version of Battleship, that I do want to have considered as a standard included offering for an Ubuntu (MATE?) distro. So, I'm in over my head for now, and will leave that suggestion for others with equal irritation for the issue who might have some time to contribute.

No prod intended; writing an extension seemed like the only path forward. Otherwise, perhaps Thunar has this feature?
